The assignment I didn't know existed until the teachers told me about it
Une vertu de l'âme
One-act play
By: MakiatoKae
Setting:
Paris, France (2006)
Parc Kellermann
Characters:
Louis Moreau
Veronica Laurent
Théo Moreau
Scene 1: Parc Kellermann
A couple of individuals can be seen at the side of the plaza.
By the noise they are making, it seems obvious that they're bickering.
Louis:
Veronica! Attends une minute s'il-te-plaît!
Louis chased Veronica, getting a hold of her wrist
and making her turn to face him.
Although, Veronica furrowed her brows,
She still waited for Louis to speak.
Louis:
Please, Veronica. Just listen to me.
Louis begged, desperation can be heard through his voice.
Annoyed, Veronica yanked her arm from Louis’ hand.
She tilted her head up a little to look more courageous.
Veronica:
S'il te plaît, Louis. Stop this cowardice of yours!
I have enough of your filth!
In spite of this quarrel, a man who already lay so low
won't be able to reach the peak it once possessed;
Veronica:
Look just how pathetic you've become, Louis!
Mingling yourself with cigarettes and alcohol! Not even a care for your own flesh and blood!
And a woman who chooses to be blind
Despite the redness of the latter’s soul becomes,
only then regret blossoms within their beings.
Louis:
It's not my fault, Veronica!
They pushed me to become who I am now!
Veronica:
And you let yourself be captured by those fiend’s shackles!
Veronica looked at Louis, tears forming in her eyes.
Subsequently falling on her cheekbones down to the chin.
Louis lowered his head, while his fist clenched. After a while, Louis raised his head. Tears now flood his eyes as he speaks with despondency.
Louis:
Aren't you the same too? Véronique?
If it weren't for me, you would be the one in my situation now. And… ‘not a care for my own flesh and blood’?
In an instant, Louis’ voice felt heavy
and his eyes now showed sorrow.
Louis:
Perhaps, you've already forgotten the hellhole you've gotten yourself into, 5 years ago. Well, I guess you would.
Veronica furrowed her brows with a look of doubt.
Veronica:
What are you talking about?
Everyone knows that you're the only one who went astray!
Espèce d'imbécile!
Louis looked straight onto Veronica’s eyes.
He heaved a sigh,
then massaging the bridge of his nose,
right before looking at her again,
this time with fixed eyes.
Louis:
Comment oses-tu!
Say that I've led astray,
when you can't even remember the reason why
Théo almost came face to face to his death door!
My own flesh and blood! As well as yours!
Louis:
Enfer… we used to be happy
until the day you almost suffocate Théo to death.
Veronica looked shocked,
she clutched his shirt with her hands.
Frantic evident in her eyes.
Clearly unaware of the events unfolding right before her.
Veronica:
Imbécile!
Are you sick?!
Why would I dare to do such vile actions towards my dear Théo!
Louis scoffed.
He grasped Veronica's hands,
preventing her from further clutching his shirt.
Louis:
You're the one sick in the head. You keep making a mess everywhere,
wasting your time on your so-called paradise.
Thus, I have no choice but to clean up after the mess you've left.
Louis:
Veronica. Just how many times do I have to remind you to have a consultation with a therapist? I've already helped you beyond my capabilities.
Yet, you paid me with debt crushing right onto my door!
Comme c'est désagréable !
Before Veronica could speak,
Louis turned around.
Louis:
There's nothing else that can fix this messed up life of ours.
Time can't be rewind, and so our mistakes.
Louis looked at Veronica sideways.
Louis:
I suggest we part ways here. I'll take the child with me.
Veronica looked furious at what she heard.
She raised her voice.
Veronica:
You!... You just can't take the child with you!
With such a poor environment,
Théo will eventually follow behind your filthy footsteps!
Louis:
Before you open your foul mouth, you better look at yourself first.
I know for a fact that I've led astray.
I do, however, know that I can raise Théo much better than you!
To a gentleman and independent individual!
Louis:
Pour l'amour de Dieu, Véronique.
You should just focus on healing yourself.
With those last sentences,
Louis completely left.
Leaving Veronica to fend off by herself.
Although, his composure now is calm and collected.
Louis scoffed,
leaving off a sarcastic remark.
Louis:
What virtue... More like iniquity of the soul.
(If I somehow made a mistake regarding the french language... Please do remind me through comments)
