First Child

Discovery

First things first, the dogs knew before Malina did.

Now, with both Risky and Nala being trained for certain tasks, Malina hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. They were always cuddly and affectionate when at home.

Bob was actually the first to notice that it was different.

Nala had reacted differently to her normal alerts. She began to lay with her head on Mal's stomach more often, or curling up next to her in a way that she could be protected.

Risky had begun to growl at people if he thought they got too close to Malina, even if they were friends. He was only ever patient with Bob when it came to Mal.

And when Bob pointed these traits out to his wife, she froze for a second.

"What? What do you think it is?" He asked her.

She took a deep breath. "I need to take some tests." She doesn't have to say anything more. Bob understands.

"You mean?"

"It's a possibility."

Well, it was more than a possibility, it was a reality. After a few at-home tests, Mal scheduled an appointment with the doctor to get blood work confirmation.

She looked at her husband when she got home with the results.

"We're having a baby, Baby!"

Cravings

Mal didn't have many Cravings with this pregnancy. She normally liked salty stuff on her period, so she was well stocked with those items. She didn't like pickles, didn't crave weird combinations of food.

She mostly just wanted more of what she already loved. Although she did eat more than the normal amount of ice cream, and of flavors she didn't normally touch.

Last Month

The last few weeks of her pregnancy were tough. Not having parents and being estranged from her biological family had finally hit Malina.

Suddenly, all she could think about was not being a good mother and not having any relations to her side of the family. She didn't want her child to grow up feeling unloved or unwanted by one side of their family.

She even expressed the feelings to Reyna, as the woman more than understood about not having parents to give grandchildren.

Reyna kept her calm, saying that the child would always know they were loved because family isn't just blood. They were family and already loved the child. So what if she wasn't in contact with her bio family? She had a great one right here, with her every step of the way.

Delivery

Giving birth was the single most painful experience Mal had ever had.

Her son had her in labor for over 12 hours. She was doing pretty good at first, but by the fifth hour, she could feel the pain.

Bob was there as soon as she called, practically tripping on his way to the car to get off base. He did promise to give updates as the day went on, knowing labor would take a while.

Malina had requested that Reyna come visit, but no one else. Other than Bob, Reyna had been the person keeping her calm and collected. Reyna had really helped Malina through some tough challenges during this pregnancy and she didn't want anyone else.

(Reyna was honored to be named Godmother, along with Natasha.)

Their son came screaming into the world around 4am, an early riser just like his father.
