"I'm ready."

Her hand gripped the side of the railing quickly, her palms clammy from the anticipation. She looked up into the starlit sky, whispering those exact words several times under her breath before squeezing her eyes shut. Her tongue slid over dry, cracked lips as she balanced on the balls of her feet, gripping the railing even harder now.

“I’m ready.”

She took in a sharp breath and exhaled slowly, biting her lip before swaying gently. Her eyelids were still shut, her vision completely clouded by darkness. But she liked it better that way.

It was easier to see nothing than to see reality.

Her body continued to sway to the music pounding in her ears, her iPod bulging out of her pocket and her earphones slammed into her ears like they had been for hours.

Her swaying slowed to a halt, as she took a deep breath, and allowed a tiny tear to escape the corner of her eye.

“I’m not ready.”

And with that, her body became airborne, and suddenly, she was falling.
