All her childhood Sayuri was showered with love from all her family members, but one stood out for her, it maybe was his energy or the familiarity of his eyes, but one thing was sure Avatar Aang was the child's favorite person, even as an infant if he walked into the room she would immediately stop crying. Her feeling were reciprocated by the infamous Avatar, he would spend hours playing and babysitting his first granddaughter, his little flower.
When looking at her no one had a second guess that Yuri was destined for greatness, even as a young child it was something about how she looked at you, her eyes were smart, she had a wit about her, she had an airbender's spirit some would say, but they couldn't be wronger.
As Aang was playing with his grandchild on a sunny day at airtemple island he could not believe his eyes. The little 3 year old in front of him water-wiped him. His granddaughter was not an airbender, she did not take after him or her father, but she shared her grandmother's gift. Letting aside his slight disappointment that his first grandchild will not carry the airbenders legacy, he was gleaming with profound pride. His granddaughter was a waterbending prodigy, an early bloomer at just 3 years old. But his pride will not be felt by everyone.
Tenzin was disappointed, his dreams all crumbled before him, the future of the air nation was inexistent at the moment, but he tried to hide it, for the sake of his daughter, for the sake of his father, for the sake of the family. But the guilt and resentment for his fallen dreams stayed eating at his mind for years to come. Keeping his feeling repressed was not easy as his daughter's waterbending came to her like breathing, Tenzin couldn't help but wonder what if she were an airbender, would she be a young master? Would she invent new techniques? He would never know.

As years went by everything changed but Tenzin's feelings , feeling that were becoming harder and harder to repress, the walls he had build to keep them in taking hit after hit, from the avatar;s death to the failing relationship he had with the child's mother. Sayuri could slowly start to feel her father's resentment, he would not watch her bending, would not smile proudly at her for any splash she made, but he cared for her and loved her that was no doubt. Between the coldness of her father and the Chief's overbearing work schedule Yuri's spare time was left to be spent travelling. Her summers were filled with snow spending the majority of them at the Snow Pole being trained by her grandmother Master Katara. Her springs were spent in the swamp studying earthbending techniques under her other grandmother ex Chief of police Toph Beifong. But what Sayuri loved most were the winters. The warm winters she spent studying the firebender masters in the fire nation Royal palace with Fire Lord Zuko.
Even though her childhood was filled with training and breathtaking stories from her masters and her mother's office something was always missing from young Sayuri's life. As she grew her skill and talented followed shaping her into a fine master but so did her wit. As long as she spent training she took double the time reading and trying to understand every person around her. With time she let go of all the resentment she had harboured for her father not wanting to fight fire with fire and decided to reconcile with him before her sister's birth. They couldn't be as close as they should anymore but it was a starting point.
