Oner, sniffing back tears, took a moment to steady his breathing. "Then what am I to you?" he asked, voice trembling. "If not a toy, not just some fleeting amusement for you, then what am I?"
Gumayusi hesitated, struggling to put his emotions into words. "Oner," he began, "you're important to me. More important than you realize. It's not about physical attraction, though, yes, I find you incredibly captivating. But it's more than that. You're smart, talented, hardworking. I respect you. I admire you."
Oner's gaze hardened, unconvinced. "But what does that mean, Gumayusi? What am I to you?"
Gumayusi took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "You're... special to me. Someone I look forward to seeing every day, someone I worry about, someone I... care for." He paused, swallowing hard. He wanted to say more, to tell Oner that he loved him, but something held him back. A nagging fear, perhaps of rejection or ruining what they had.
Oner's eyes welled up again, his voice barely above a whisper. "But you won't commit to anything. You won't give us a label."
Gumayusi sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I... I'm sorry. I... I don't know what's holding me back."
Oner nodded slowly, wiping his tears with the back of his hand. "I need some time. I'm going to shower."
Watching Oner retreat to the bathroom, Gumayusi sank into the couch, a mixture of frustration and regret bubbling within him. Why couldn't he just say it? Why couldn't he admit to Oner, and perhaps to himself, the depth of his feelings? The silence of the apartment weighed heavily on him as he contemplated the mess he'd made of things.
