[XL.] Stray Arrow
Screams erupted from the edge of the party and it only took a second for the celebration to plummet into chaos.
Cassandra turned to the sound in haste, her eyes immediately falling on the men cloaked in black, the lower part of their faces covered with a black cloth as they moved with purpose.
There were about a dozen of them wielding shortswords though they did not appear to be using them to attack anyone. In fact, they were only pushing forward.
Oberyn held on to her tightly, his arms wrapped around her, not wanting to lose her as guests and servants began running in the opposite direction.
There was no more thought of propriety as they bumped into each other, knocking many to the ground. Screams of pain and panic littered the air as these masked mercenaries began to advance, their eyes searching for something.
Or someone.
A lord was about to knock into her but Oberyn held her upright, pulling her to his body and refusing to let her fall. Together, they tried to move in the direction away from the masked men.
"Who in seven hells are they?" Cassandra shouted over the noise, noticing that the men kept advancing, striking down those they would reach no matter who they could be.
"I don't know. Stay close to me." Oberyn answered, tucking her close under his arm, dodging frantic guests as he went.
Together, they attempted to move past the throngs of people just as the guards finally went on the defense. The orange sunbursts on their clothing as well as the gleam of their spears extended outward was a sight to behold.
It was only then that the masked men attacked, their motions swift as their weapons clashed with the guards of Sunspear. Men from both sides fell as quickly as they came and it was hard to determine who would emerge as the victor.
Once they had reached a far enough distance the trees still lit in candlelight though not as bright as it had been, Oberyn unwrapped his arms from around her.
His eyes scoured over her form, as if assessing her for any injuries before took a step back as though he meant to return to where they had just escaped from.
Cassandra clasped onto his hand, holding on to him tightly. "Where are you going?"
Oberyn's eyes drifted to where her hand held onto his before shooting her a comforting smile. "I will not allow those men to hurt anyone else."
"So you would put yourself at risk, in the line of fire? No." She challenged, refusing to let him go.
Though he looked as if he did not think that a possibility, he recognized the desperation on her face. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel that way, especially when they were just on the road to mend their relationship.
