LVI. Lasting Goodbye
"Ned?"
Cassandra's eyes widened at the sight of the other man outside their door.
Ned, it seems, was also quite shocked to see her despite being the one who had knocked. His cheeks turned red and his eyes shifted elsewhere as he cleared his throat. "Lady Cassandra."
It was only then that she remembered that she was in mere bedclothes with ruffled hair, swollen lips, and perhaps even marks on her neck from Oberyn's attentions.
Speaking of, she could hear her husband from behind her scrambling out of their bed. It only took a few seconds for him to join her side and she vaguely registered his robe being draped across her shoulders.
She shot him a grateful look, wrapping his mustard robe further around her form. Then she turned her gaze to the man outside their chambers. "Ned, what are you doing here?"
Ned finally turned to look at them, still looking uncomfortable. He opened his mouth to speak up but Oberyn beat him to it.
"Haven't you and your wife said enough? You dishonor my wife with a lie and now you come here like some blubbering idiot?" Oberyn snapped, moving to shut the door in his face.
Ned's foot blocked the door before it could fully close, looking imploringly at Cassandra. "Please, I just want to talk."
Oberyn was willing to crush the other man's foot by forcing the door shut but before he could do so, Cassandra raised a hand to her husband's chest to capture his attention.
Whatever message passed between them made him sigh just as Cassandra spoke. "Then talk."
"I was hoping we could speak. Just the two of us." Ned answered, meeting her gaze.
At his words, Oberyn crossed his arms over his chest and scoffed mockingly. Cassandra didn't bother to chastise him then, knowing that he was merely trying to protect her. In his unique little way.
In response, Cassandra pushed the door further open to gesture for him to go inside. "We can speak inside."
Both men looked like they wanted to protest with Ned speaking up first. "Lady Cassandra, whatever I have to say-"
"Lord Stark, my husband cares greatly for my safety so you must understand his concerns. This way, he can keep watch over me while you and I speak." Cassandra explained, looking at them both and daring them to question her. "Now, let us hurry this along. We all had a long day."
With only a bit of hesitation, Ned scurried inside and followed after Cassandra. She led the way to the chamber's solar, sitting in one of the plush seats.
Oberyn kept his distance though he was not too far as he poured himself a goblet of Dornish red. His eyes were still on his wife but he was not within earshot.
