I sat in the middle of the bed, the late night silence of the mansion wrapping around me like a heavy blanket. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, scrolling through my contacts until I found Rhys's name. It's been a while since I last spoke to him, too long ,but he is the only true friend I have.
Tapping the call button I held the phone to my ear listening to the ring until his familiar voice answered. "Well, well, I thought you'd forget about me, my dear friend." Rhys teased.
A small smile crept into my lips "You know I never could. Besides I have some tea to spill about my new job."
"Do tell,"
I lean against the pillows "I'm about to become Kai's Bianchi bodyguard."
"Isn't he Lonzo's Bianchi kid?" His surprise was evident through the phone. "Getting mixed up in the mob is dangerous, Mila."
"I didn't get involved because I wanted to, my boss assigned me for a mission. I was sent to rescue Kai after he got kidnapped by some rival family, it's a long story but let's just say he now wants me to be his bodyguard." I explained.
Rhys let out a low whistle"I'm pretty sure he's into you, girl. Don't I live for a good romance story?" I roll my eyes even though he can't see me.
"It's not like that, Rhys. He's father is an asshole and he doesn't have anyone he can trust."
"Whatever you say, sweetheart, just be safe, okay? Protect yourself, body and heart."
"Not again with you speeches. I know what I'm doing. I'm a big girl." He let out a sarcastic sure you are. "Anyway, what have you been up to?"
Rhys let out a chuckle "I have been on a pretty standard job, guarding some business man. Not so exciting, but there was one interesting part. I met this author while I was on duty, she was signing some books at the bookstire where my client had some stuff to do. Mila, I swear I haven't stopped thinking about her since. Help me!" He rambled the whole thing in one breath, I could tell he was really nervous.
"I didn't know you are into bookworms." I lifted a brow, intrigued.
"She had this presence about her. The kind that draws you in without even trying. I caught a part of her reading where she talked about her characters, it was like they were real. Her voice was so sweet, I could listen to her talk all day!"
I grinned "I don't think I ever heard you talk about someone like this before. "
"I actually went to talk to her before I left, we ended up talking for a few minutes and there was just this connection.I had a weird feeling in my body and I even bought one of her books to have an excuse to come to her next signing event and see her again." He laughed. "God, I'm down bad for this woman."
"You sound just like you were a teenager, so smitten about a stranger. And here I thought you were only obsessed with physical training."
Rhys laughed " I guess I can make room for a new obsession." He paused "What about you? You're not planning to get too attacked to the Bianchi kid, are you?"
My smile faded slightly. "I'm not looking for anything beyond the job. I can't do attachments, especially my clients, it's not professional at all." Maybe if I met him in different circumstances...
"Fair enough," he sighed "just be careful, yeah? I need to still have you to rant about my endless love." I chuckle.
"I'll always be here if you need me, Rhys."
"Right back at you, M."
With that I ended the call and sit the phone down beside me, the room felt quiet again but this time the silence wasn't quite as heavy. As I laid against the pillows I couldn't help but think of Kai and the uncertain road that lay ahead. I'm not sure where this job would take me but I knew one thing , I'd see it through no matter what.
After a night of tossing and turning, the morning came through. The first thing I did was message my boss and tell him about the situation p, I knew he won't respond right away but I'm sure he will agree because he was the one to first assign me to this family.
Doing my morning routine I realized I don't have any more clothes since I didn't expect to stay longer than necessary. I guess I'll have to make a stop to the mall and buy some necessities.
Going downstairs, I spot Kai sitting on the couch, scrolling through his phone as he picked his sandwich off the plate and took a bite, he glanced up when I entered. His brows lifting up slightly in question. "Morning," he greeted setting his phone down."Did you sleep okay?"
"Yeah, I slept fine." I replied . "Listen, I need to go out in the city to get some things because I didn't expect to stick around."
Kai nodded. "What do you need?"
"Could I borrow a car? The mall is pretty far away from here." I asked
"You can take one of the black cars in the garage. It's a black Mercedes that you might like." My interest peaked. Mercedes was is favorite car brand. "Or I could come with you. I haven't been out the house since the whole thing happened. I'd like some fresh air." He offered.
I could drive myself and make the trip quick and an eventful but something about the looking Kai's s eyes made me hesitate so I accepted. "Fine, but you're driving." A smile bloomed on his face.
"Deal." We both headed towards the garage and my eyes settled on the car. The black Mercedes waiting in the garage was sleek and elegant. The obsidian paint reflected a mirror like shine, almost like liquid.
I climbed into the passenger seat, buckling myself in. The interior was impressive. The seats were made out of black leather featuring white stitching, and ambient lights bathed the car in a soft glow.
As Kai settled into the drivers seat, the car roared to life and he glanced sideways at me. "Ready?"
I roll my eyes "Just watch the road."
We pulled out of the garage and into the driveway, passing the tall gates of the Bianchi mansion. As we cruised the long road, Kai's frame seemed to relax against his seat.
"So," he said after a few moments of silence " how come you let me tag along? Did my irresistible charm win you over?" I glanced at him from the corner of my eye.
"Don't flatter yourself. I figured it was better than you sneaking out of the house on the first opportunity."
"Ah, so this is like taking your kid to the mall. Understood." He teased. "You truly wound me, Mila." I shake my head and hide a smile.
Kai turned the wheel, guiding the car into a busier street as we drew closer to the city. "If you ask ,e it's more of like a date," he casually said with a hint of playfulness in his voice.
I snorted at his suggestion "If this is the ideal of a date for you then you must not go out a lot." He laughed, the sound genuine.
"I thought we'd start small, but if you want I know a good Italian restaurant around here."
"Keep dreaming, Kai. I'm not here to entertain you." The corner of my mouth twitched up.
"I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm sure watching you pick up clothes will let thrilling but I want to have fun while doing it."
"You can talk all you want but don't expect me to humor everything that you say. Relaxing isn't exactly my job description." Kai switched lanes and stopped at a red light. "You are still a target and I need to stay alert."
"Not sure how alert you'll be when playing dress to impress at the mall." I roll my eyes at his remark but don't answer.
"I thought you'd be colder." He said after a couple of moments of driving. I frown.
"What do you mean?"
"Well you've been looking out for me more than anyone else, more than Romeo even. I'm just glad you're around." He spoke softly, each word felt sincere.
Silence settled between us for the rest of the drive, we approach the malls parking lot and Kai turned off the car. We both got out and Kai threw a smirk at me. "Ready to shop till you drop?" I north and roll my eyes, walking towards the entrance with Kai hot on my heels.
"Try not getting lost."
As we walked I couldn't help but feel the weight of his stare on the back of my head. I wasn't sure what he saw in me but I must have feelings interfere between us.
