The scent of fresh clothes greeted me as I stepped into the clothing store. I glanced around at the racks and displays looking around for anything that could catch my eyes.
The saleswoman gave us a polite smile as we entered, greeting us. "Hello, could I help you with anything?" She asked.
"No, it's fine. I'm just looking." I replied.
"Maybe the boyfriend would want to buy a gift for you? I could help him pick something up." My cheeks went up in flames as I heard Kai chuckle behind me.
"We're not like that...he's just a friend." I quickly said not letting Kai say something stupid
"Oh well-" she began again but I interrupted her.
"I'll just look around, thank you." I said and hurried away in the other side of the store, Kai following me. I could see the grim on his face but when I gave him a glare the amusement washed off his face.
I had only begin scanning the rows of clothes for something comfortable when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to see Lark's name pop up. With a quick glance at Kai who got distracted by the display of jackets I answered the call and pressed the phone to my ear. "Yeah?" I said, keeping my voice low.
"Mila. I'm not happy with this impulsive decision of yours. Working for the Bianchi family?"
"I know but it's only a temporary arrangement. Kai asked me to stay as his personal guard and it wouldn't hurt to stick around for a little. It's good for the company also." I quicky said.
The line was quiet for a bit then her boss let out a small huff "Just make sure you are not getting in over your head, you know how dangerous the mob is.If something goes south they'll be more than happy to let you take the fall for them."
"I know what I'm doing. I'll keep you updated."
"Good. If you need out let me know and I'll sent a team."
"Thank you." With that I close the call and focus back in shopping when I see Kai approaching. "Work call?" He asked.
"Yeah, nothing too important."
I picked out a few outfits I liked. Some for just lounging at the mansion and some more professional ones. "Hold these." I say, dumping the whole lot of clothes on Kai, almost covering the entirety of his upper body.
"What am I ? Your hanger?" He complained, carefully watching his step as we head towards the changing rooms.
"If you came with me you should at least make yourself useful." Opening the curtain of the changing room, I step in, taking two outfits from Kai's hands. "I'll tell you when you give me more." With that I closed the curtain and began the tiring process of changing clothes.
"I wanna see too!" Kai says. I roll my eyes but I step out of the cabin and show him the first outfit. I wear a black letter jacket over the dark gray fitted tshirt and the black ripped jeans I picked earlier.I glanced at myself in the mirror, adjusting the jacket collar slightly, them glanced towards Kai.
"What do you think?" Kai's gaze swept over me, making me want to clench my thighs.
"Looks good." His voice casual, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes. "Gives badass vibes. It definitely suits you." I rolled my eyes but I couldn't help the smile that tugged at my lips.
I tried a few more clothes which Kai demanded to see and I decided to humor him. Each time he said I looked good that I started to not trust his opinion anymore.
I hesitated for a moment before trying the last thing, a red dress. It was bolder than anything else I've chosen and I'm not a huge dress wearer but it's good to have one for special occasions. It was deep crimson that hugged the curves of my body perfectly. The fabric was soft with a subtle shimmer in the light.
When I stepped out of the fitting room and Kai's eyes ran over my body, I froze in place.
His eyes widened slightly, and for a moment, he seemed to forget how to speak.
Smoothing my hands down the sides of the dress, I asked. "What do you think? It's too much?"
Kai cleared his throat and spoke though it was quieter than usual. "Wow," he breathed. "You look incredible, Mila." His eyes traced the slit of the dress that exposed my leg up to my tigh. "Red definitely suits you."
"Thank you," I said, feeling the heat warm up my face. "This was the last one, I'll go change and then we can go." Kai nodded, though his gaze didn't leave me as I turned around and closed the curtain.
"You could wear this on the way home!" I hear Kai say from the other side. I chuckle.
"I'm not guarding you in a dress though you'd probably love it." I roll my eyes and take the dress off, putting on my own clothes.
I gave Kai the selection of clothes I chose and headed towards the register. The cashier began scanning the clothes and placing them in multiple bags.
"The total is 1589 dollars." I take out my card and just I'm about to purchase everything, Kai hands over his black card.
"What-" I begin but he shushes me.
"Consider it a gift for saving me." He smiled down at me and warmth spread through my chest.
"Thank you." He grabs the bags and we head towards the exit.
