"Jake? I'm gonna get a ride home with Lainey, she wants to show me the house she's renting."
"Okay. Meet me at mine for seven-ish later."
"Uh-huh." She pressed a quick kiss to his lips before following Lainey across the parking lot to her car.
"Where're you going this evening?" Lainey asked.
"We're going out for dinner. I think I once complained to him that I don't get to dress up fancy often enough, so now whenever we're in the same place for long enough he takes me somewhere posh and we dress up nice."
"Aww, that's actually really sweet."
"You don't sound too surprised, either."
"I've never really liked him, but I've always noticed how well he treats you." There was a pause as Lainey checked their turning was clear, and Georgiana decided to fill it.
"So, you and Coyote, huh?"
"Don't say it like that, there's nothing going on, I just happen to find him attractive, that's all." Georgiana could have sworn she saw Lainey go a little red.
"This is more than just him being attractive. Every pilot in the navy is attractive, it's practically on the entry requirements. You like him."
Lainey shook her head. "It doesn't matter."
"But it could matter."
"What do you mean, cupid?"
"I've seen him watching you before. If you approached him, I don't think he'd say no."
"What do you mean 'before'? How long have you been shipping this, Gigi, be honest?"
"A while." They both laughed and they kept up the idle conversation until they reached Lainey's house. It was a fair size, and a good distance both from the base and the beach, as well as Georgiana's own rented property. Lainey gave her a quick tour before dropping her back home, telling her to 'enjoy dressing up fancy'.
If there was one thing Georgiana did enjoy, besides flying, it was making herself look nice. She supposed it pushed her closer to the stereotypical blonde category, enjoying makeup, clothes, and shoes, but she didn't really care, especially because she knew Jake didn't. In fact, she knew that he liked it when they went out together and he could almost 'show her off'. She spent close to two hours in her room getting ready, putting on a blue silk spaghetti strap dress and brushing her blonde hair out of its regulation bun. The heat of the late Californian summer meant she didn't have to worry about remembering a jacket, so she just put on her favourite pair of black stiletto sandals and got in her car to drive over to Jake's.
"Hey, gorgeous," he said when he opened the door, looking her up and down and grabbing her by the hips to pull her in for a kiss.
"Looks like we matched without even trying," Georgiana commented, taking in the blue suit he was wearing.
"We're just that in tune," he smiled. "Ready to go?"
"Yep, let's do it."
The restaurant he took her to was a thirty-minute drive away, so naturally Georgiana claimed aux as soon as she could, blasting their favourite music from the speakers in what she fondly dubbed his 'Texas truck'. The place itself was very pretty, but a bit full of old men alone with young women for her taste, which she did her best to ignore as long as the women looked comfortable.
"How are we?" Jake asked her once they had ordered their food. "We've been long distance for eight months, which was never going to be easy, but are we okay?"
"We're great, Jake," she assured him, taking his hand across the table. "And we're through that now. This assignment looks long term, and I doubt either of us is going to want to give it up any time soon."
"Not if I get to hear the words 'elite squadron' and 'best of the best' so often," he smirked. "And even if you weren't there, Fightertown is a great place."
Georgiana nodded in agreement. "I may have been born in Sacramento, but Miramar is where my heart lives. Every holiday as a kid was San Diego, and then of course Top Gun, and you." She squeezed his hand. "I love you, Jake."
"I love you, too, Georgie," he replied, kissing her fingers. "Did I tell you how beautiful you look?"
"Twice."
"You look beautiful. Three is the magic number."
