Something was wrong. The beeping of several alarms filled the cockpit but was soon replaced by the thick sound of blood rushing past Georgie's ears. Desperately she clung onto the control stick with both hands, fingers white with the pressure, but it was no use; the plane spiralled downwards, ever faster, careering towards the rising earth.
With a gasp, Georgie woke up.
"Woah, are you okay?"
Jake sat up, gently gripping her shoulders with both hands. "Babe, you're shaking."
"I'm fine," she determined, her voice cracking slightly. "It was just a nightmare."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
She shook her head, glancing at the clock on his bedside table. "It's probably time I went anyway, I need to get ready for work." She stood up before leaning down to kiss him. "I'll see you in- two hours."
"If you're sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine. Promise." She smiled at him.
Trying her best to put her dream out of her mind, she pulled on her clothes, got into her car, and drove home.
One week passed, the days packed with the most difficult training exercises the navy could muster. Georgiana didn't think she'd been so tired since Top Gun, but she was sure enjoying herself. Other than flying, she really loved being around people, and Miramar was a bustling place that allowed for plenty of social interaction.
The following Friday, Georgie was playing cards with Phoenix, Rooster, Payback, and Fanboy. Lainey and Coyote were talking nearby as they waited for the others to finish an exercise.
"Georgie, what are you doing tonight?" Phoenix asked her suddenly.
"Nothing- why, what have you got in mind?"
"We haven't had a girls' night in ages."
Georgie grinned. "You are so right. Lainey," she called out, "you aren't busy tonight, are you?"
"No?"
"Girls night it is then," she settled, nodding at Phoenix, who grinned. "Who's go is it?"
"Mine," Phoenix told her. "I still don't understand how to play this bloody game."
"Here." Rooster leaned over in his seat so he could see her cards. "Put that one down," he instructed, taking it directly from her hand. "Then, if someone else plays on top of that, you can get rid of these two."
"Thank you," she smiled at him.
Georgie took in the sight of the two of them, glancing at each other when they thought no one was looking, and then over at Lainey and Coyote, listening to the exercise on the radio, his hand on the back of her chair. Love is in the air, she thought to herself. Who knew one squadron could have so much romance?
By seven o'clock that evening, they had all set up camp at Phoenix's house, with takeaway pizza, pyjamas, and Greta Gerwig's Little Women playing on the TV.
"I have loved you ever since I have known you, Jo," Laurie was pleading.
"Every time I watch this I can't believe she turned him down," Georgie sighed.
"You'd marry him, then?" Phoenix grinned.
"Of course she would, have you seen him?" Lainey responded. "I mean, he's supposed to be the most attractive guy out there."
"His head is shaped like a bicycle seat?" Phoenix pointed out.
"What?" Georgie spluttered, laughing.
"She's not wrong, actually," Lainey cackled. The sound of their raucous laughter drowned out the film completely, subsiding only when Georgie's phone buzzed.
It was a text from Jake: if you need me im at coyotes getting hammered.
Amused, she tapped out a reply: have fun, be safe tho. Love you xxx
"Everything alright?" enquired Phoenix.
"Yeah, it's just Jake," Georgie smiled, putting her phone back down.
Lainey sat up straight. "So. Speaking of marriage proposals, and young Jacob... you've been with him for a minute now. Do you think he's going to ask any time soon? Do you want him to?"
Georgie shrugged. "I have no idea. I'd like to marry him, one day, but I'm not going to pressure him. You know what pilots are like with commitment."
"But you do want to marry him?"
She nodded. "If nothing else, I'd like him as my next of kin if I die tomorrow."
Phoenix scoffed. "You are so romantic, Georgiana."
"I love him, and no signatures on a piece of paper are ever going to define that."
"There she is," Lainey grinned.
"Anyway," Georgie continued, "now that I've poured my heart out, it's your turn. I need updates on both of your love lives, stat."
"I've been secretly hooking up with Rooster for about a month."
"Say that again, Natasha?" Lainey demanded. "You've been fucking Bradley Bradshaw. In secret. For a month."
Phoenix nodded slowly, smirking.
"Just fucking? You're not like... a thing?" Georgie clarified.
"Not yet. But I think he might officially ask me out soon."
"I hope so," Georgie sighed. "Lainey, your go."
Lainey grimaced. "Okay. First, I'd like to officially admit that I do like Coyote. And I think he likes me. And that's as far as it's gone."
"Lain, he definitely likes you," Georgie declared. "In fact, I predict he's going to confess to you within a fortnight."
"Oh my god, guys, imagine- triple date," Phoenix said.
Georgie gasped. "We have to. The guys would hate it, but we have to."
