Shijie wakes me and Xiquan up early again the next morning. I quickly make my way to the lecture room, not wanting to be late. Lan Zhe, Xiquan, and I sit together again, but this time, we sit closer to Hanguang-Jun because of Lan Zhe's suggestion.
And because Wei-ge was messing around with paper talismans and paying attention to the bird Nie-gongzi had snuck in instead of Lan Qiren, he got called on. Just like in The Untamed, Lan Qiren deems all of his answers acceptable until Wei-ge's mention of implied use of demonic cultivation. That's when he gets in trouble and gets a book thrown at his head, and since I was sitting behind him, I had to duck, too. My friends and I suppress our laughs at the sight, and Wei-ge is kicked out of class.
A few minutes later, Hanguang-Jun is excused from class so he can go supervise Wei Ying, which means Wangxian in the library pavilion! Yay! However, my excitement doesn't last long. After Hanguang-Jun leaves, nothing else special happens, and the class just becomes boring.
***************
When the class FINALLY ends, I find Zewu-Jun speaking to Wei-ge and Jiang-ge, seemingly to be reminding them about the rules. "What's going on?" I ask Xiquan.
"Long story short, A-Ying did something stupid and A-Cheng decided to chase him," Xiquan explains, an exasperated but amused edge to her voice.
Before I could reply to her, Wei Ying asks if we want to go to Caiyi Town and exorcise some water demons. We agree to join, and Wen Ning and Wen Qing also come along.
"Xiquan, Bailin, these are two of my fellow disciples and friends, Lan Yuxin and Lan Dejun." Lan Zhe brings over two Lan disciples and introduces them to Xiquan and Bailin.
Lan Yuxin, a girl with eyes an unusually pale shade of brown and a strong, slightly cold presence, bows politely. "Wei-xiaojie and Wei-er-xiaojie (still feels weird for people to actually call me that), nice to meet you. As Lan-guniang introduced me, I am Lan Yuxin."
"I'm Lan Dejun," the other disciple, a handsome boy with dark eyes and a calm demeanor, says. "I'm pleased to meet you. How do you find it in Gusu?"
I smile. "I'm Wei Bailin-"
"And I'm Wei Xiquan," my sister cuts in.
"It's really nice here! The scenery is really pretty, and the weather is cool and pretty relaxing," I say. "It's even better than I expected, and my expectations were already quite high." Well, Hengdian World Studios tried, but it's honestly impossible to capture the beauty of Gusu!
Lan Dejun is about to reply when a loud, arrogant-sounding voice rudely interrupts him.
"Does the young mistress of the Gusu Lan Clan really think that she's too good for the disciples of her own sect, and prefers the company of Jiang disciples, daughters of a servant, no less? Though I should remember, you aren't exactly of high birth either." I look up and see Su She, and annoyance flares up inside me.
Lan Dejun makes a quiet noise of exasperation, and Lan Yuxin mutters, "Not this again..." under her breath.
So Su She did this regularly? Angry, I take a step towards him, but someone pulls me back. Lan Zhe whispers, "Don't pick a fight with him. I don't want to hand out punishments. I'll deal with him."
Lan Zhe breathes in and turns to face Su She. "Su Minshan, there are no rules stating that I cannot be friends with disciples of other sects. The status of Wei-xiaojie and Wei-er-xiaojie's (feels even weirder when friends call me that) parents don't matter to me. They are kind people and good friends, and therefore I enjoy their company. And as a reminder, people shouldn't be judged based on their standing in life, nor by the status or doings of their parents, and should be judged based on who they are."
