A few minutes later, Athena walked into the staff room, sitting down at the table with Maddie...
"How are you feeling?" Asked Athena.
"Like a crazy person." Maddie says.
Athena chuckled.
"I mean, that is not the first caller I've yelled at today. It's maybe the fifth. No, sixth. I also yelled at Ash on the phone this morning." Maddie said.
"Oh." Athena mumbled.
"Well, I'm considering a home birth." Maddie said.
"Oh, I'm surprised given your..." Athena murmured.
"Please don't say my age." Said Maddie.
"Background. You were a nurse. Figured you'd be all-in for giving birth surrounded by all the medical bells and whistles." Athena tells Maddie.
"When I got pregnant, even though it wasn't exactly planned, we were really excited. I had this idea in my head of how it was all gonna go." Maddie said.
"Then everything changed." Athena says.
"Became about protocols, tests, and masks. No visitors at the hospital or even at home, and I really tried to roll with it. You know, to adjust. But at some point..." Maddie says.
"Yeah. The weight pulls you under." Athena murmured.
"Yeah, I guess a home birth was my way of trying to get back some control." Maddie tells Athena.
"You know, she was the perfect pregnancy." Athena muttered, looking over at May and seeing her on the computer. "Barely had morning sickness. My mood swung from laughter to tears of happiness. I mean, it was amazing."
"Okay. Now I'm just jealous." Maddie said.
"Ah, but the second pregnancy. Total opposite. I mean, we had been trying for years to get pregnant again, and when we finally did... I was afraid that something was gonna go wrong. Michael had just lost his father. I was sick all the time. It was not a joyous nine months. But... when they placed that little boy on my chest, it felt the same. And the leadup to how we got to that moment, it didn't matter. He was much a miracle to me, as his sister had been maybe even a little more because it felt like I had to fight so hard to have him." Athena murmured.
"I really can't wait to meet her. There's just a part of me that wishes I could keep her in here. You know, till the world gets better out here." Said Maddie.
"Or maybe you'll find the world gets better once she's in it."

Later, Hen was sitting at a table working when she jumped, hearing Karen yelping and shouting...
"That can't be good." Hen mumbled, dropping her pen and standing up.
Karen: "I'm sorry, I have to call you back."
Karen hung up, putting the phone on the counter.
"Whoa." Hen muttered, grabbing Karen's hand.
"I think I chopped it off." Karen mumbled, groaning lightly and looking away from her hand. "Carrot chopping and important conversations definitely don't go together."
"No, they definitely do not." Hen tells Karen.
Karen groaned, and Hen checked on the finger.
"Okay, okay, okay, good news, good news. Your finger's still attached. Wait, okay, let me grab some gauze." Hen murmured, grabbing the first-aid kit and opening it up. "I just stocked this. Where's all the tape and bandages?"
Karen frowned, following the trail of bandages on the floor and finding Nia sitting in front of her teddies.
"There. All better." Nia says.
"Look." Karen says, motioning to Nia.
"All better, Ms. Pig." Said Nia.
"That is definitely your child." Karen whispered, staring at Hen.
