Chapter 8: Ice Breaks

"Kat, please tell me what happened," Damon implores her one night. She smiles and laughs "Damon,stop worrying so much your going to make yourself old," He doesn't laugh with . "I'm leaving for law school after Christmas break, whatever happened you need to tell me now," Her face turns cold. "Your leaving.... So soon?" she whispers. After a week at home Damon had decided it was time to really talk with Kat, so he had snuck into her room the evening. "Damn it Kat! Stop being so stubborn," She looks down at her hands unable to look him in the eye. "My father doesn't care about me Damon," she says after some time. "Doesn't care?" he can't believe his own ears as he questions her. "When ,I left his first words to me was "Your not as pretty as your sister","  her voice shakes as tears run down her  cheeks. " I wasn't good enough for him ...and I tried for a year to be the perfect daughter got good grades, better than I ever had in my whole life. I joined cheerleading became captain. You know what he said? "Why can't you be more like Elena?" I was a disgrace to the family ,"  bitterness rung out in her voice. "What about Elena?" he asks hoping there was someone who protected her. "Elena? She would never defy her father , Miss Perfect let him degrade me. She did nothing,"

He just holds her he can't do much more. The damage is done.  Everything made sense now why she was so cold, why she hated her twin. How could any child cope with this kind of verbal abuse for 3 years. After nothing but wracked tearless sobs run through her body she finally lifts her face from his shoulder. " Please don't tell anyone , Damon please," he nods and brings her closer. He stays with her until she falls asleep. Before he sneaks back home. Up on the deck Stefan is there and Damon can't help but feel guilty for the secret his keeping. "You were with Kat?" he asks "Yeah ,she missed home,"  Stefan nods not entirely convinced. "What happened to her?" he asks all pretense of ignorance gone. Damon looks bewildered. "Damon im not dumb, you think I can't tell she's different? I know Kat just as good as you and whatever she told you was serious cause she's trying to protect me, I know this cause those letters she sent it was like she was trying to tell me something, but everytime she just kept whatever it was going on to herself,"  he ends his conclusion frustrated running his hand through his hair.

Damon clenches his jaw hoping that all his years of lying would help him now. He blew out a gust of air before chuckling softly. Stefan looks at him as if his gone mad. "Oh Stef, your letting this crush of yours get to your head but I have to say you have a good imagination," Damon watches his words sink in and Stefan looks ashamed. Immediately dismissing his previous thoughts with Damon's words. Stefan turns a bright pink before apologizing. " Sorry , I guess I just missed her you know?" and Damon nods in understanding before he leaves for bed. His guilty a little bit heavier with every step he took.

Stefan stands motionles on the deck for a while before deciding he needed to see her as well. When he gets to her window she's fast asleep. He watches her for a while until she stirs. He feeling a little embarrassed at watching her and tries to leave before she wakes up. His too late "Stefan?" and she smiles at him like her world just got a little brighter. " I should go," he says flustered. Then she frowns "No please stay at least till I fall asleep again," she moves so he has a place to lay, and he joins her unable to deny her anything.
