Chapter2: May I have this dance?
Stefan waited nervously on the roof for Kat, it was around 12 pm but the night was warm and comforting. Finally he heard her soft footsteps as she made her way towards him. The Salvatore’s roof top had been made into a small deck and recently became Damon, Stefan and Kat’s secret hideaway spot. They usually went up at night just to spend more time together or watch the stars. Luckily climbing up the house was quite easy considering they had placed a built in staircase that lead to the deck.
“So what was so important that I had to be here at exactly 12?” Kat ask tiredly. As she said this she laid herself next to him on the make shift “bed”. Which consisted of 3 thick blankets at the bottom another blanket folded to the side in case it got cold and a few pillows. Stefan can’t bring himself to look at her as he stares at the stars blankly. “Stefan?” this time her voice is laced with concern as she stares at his profile. After what seemed like ages he lets out a sigh, she waits expectantly hoping nothing is seriously wrong. “So you know about our first school dance coming up right?’’ he says quietly keeping his gaze locked on the sky. “Yeah, what about it?” Stefan feels his stomach flip in the worst and best way as he turns his face to look at her.
“Ummm, I was thinking we’re like best friends right?” she nods looking at him as thoughts turn in her head.
“Well since we’re friends and all … would you …. I mean will you… umm would you go to the dance with me? Only if you want to of course,” by now his cheeks were tinted with pink and she couldn’t help but giggle at his nerves. “That bad huh?” he asks lightly laughing a bit at himself as well. She shakes her head before responding. “Of course I would go with you Stef,” she turns herself on her back and Stefan does the same. They don’t say anything for a while, Kat reaches for his hand Stefan looks at their hands and it doesn’t feel like it did before. Not in a bad way though they held hands plenty of times before but this felt special.
“Stef, can you promise me something?” immediately he knows he’ll promise her the world if he could. “Anything,” she smiles at this. “Promise me you’ll take me to our last school dance as well, the one before we go to college. That way it will be special because you’d be my first and last dance partner,” she looks at him hopeful he’ll say yes. He looks at her genuinely happy before he says “I promise Kat,” the two fall asleep soon after.
Around 4am the next day:
Damon wakes up begrudgingly for some reason ever since they were little he could never really sleep all night through. He always found himself waking up at odd hours in the morning. Knowing he couldn’t fall sleep again he makes his way to his brother’s bed a few footsteps away. “Stefan?” he whispers no response, he tries again a little louder this time. Still nothing…fed up he pulls his covers away only to reveal an empty bed. Damon shakes his head thinking his younger brother went to do some thinking on the deck and had fallen asleep there once again. He treads quietly as not to alert his parents towards the deck. Upon reaching the deck he sees a sleeping Stefan he chuckles at this until he sees a sleeping Katherine right next to him their hands still connected. Maybe he finally had the courage to ask her to the dance he thinks while looking at the sleeping pair.
Quickly he wakes up Stefan who is ice cold to the touch. “What?” he lets out croakily from sleep. Damon says nothing and only points towards a sleeping Katherine. Stefan looks at her and smiles goofily before realization dawns on his face. He jumps up waking her he holds out his hand for her. She rubs her eyes disorientated before she sees she wasn’t in her room. “Sorry to wake up the happy couple but if you’re not in your room when your mom wakes up we’re going to be in big trouble,” Damon explains as she gets on to her feet with Stefan’s help. She nods her head blushing when he said “couple”. Damon and Stefan watch as she climbs down their stairs jumps the fence climbs up to the open living room window and makes her way to her room upstairs.
“So, you and Kat?” Damon says cheekily smiling like a mad man. “Shut up,” Stefan says a little embarrassed. “Well that’s not a no…” Damon replies laughing as they make their way their room.
Closing the door Stefan tucks himself in bed ready to fall asleep again with a smile plastered on his face. Damon does the same but instead puts his hands behind his head and stares at the ceiling in deep thought. “Hey Stef you really like her right?” Stefan turns towards him before answering. “Yeah I do , she just so … I don’t know…she just has the thing I can’t really explain it but when she’s happy it makes me happy,” Damon nods his head he didn’t understand though. Even though a lot of the girls liked him his never liked any of the girls back. “Stefan what does it feel like?” Stefan frowns at him. “You’ve never liked a girl before?” Damon shakes his head. Thinking about when Rebekah gave him his first kiss. He didn’t like her but he had to admit it was weirdly nice it didn’t make him feel any different though. Stefan can’t hold his shock at this but tries to explain as best as he could. “Well it’s kinda like a lot of things at once your nervous around them and you just wanna run for the hills but at the same time you never want to leave their side. It’s like what they feel you feel. Its best and worst thing that could ever happen to you,” Damon nods at his explanation he wanted that so badly to feel that way for himself, no girl has ever made him feel that way. Stefan is sleeping by the time Damon realized something he wish he didn’t.
Damon had felt that feeling once but it seemed like such a long time ago he was 7 at the time and she was around 6. They had been camping it was the Forbes, the Pierce and their family camping for the summer holiday. It was their second year in Mystic falls but they all felt like family already. Caroline and Stefan were somewhere talking about a book they both liked. While Damon and Katherine where walking around when they had found a tyre swing. She ran up to it and hopped on. “Damon come push me!” she called out happily wearing her normal toothy smile. He ran over and began to push the swing. She was laughing madly and he couldn’t help but laugh with.
For a second his laughter stopped as he watched Kat and how the sun caught her dark curls. Making them seem lighter and in that moment something changed she seemed beautiful. At his age Damon had never thought any girl was beautiful except his mom. Then she came … suddenly he knew he would do anything and everything to make her happy.
Damon blinked a couple of times as everything made sense now. Why he hated to see her sad, how she was the only one who could talk to him at school, how every time he was sad she would make him smile and how he couldn’t say no to her.
It was such a long time ago that he had forgotten but his feelings was the still the same as it had been that day. This whole time he had been brushing it off as her being his very close friend.
He looked at the clock realizing it was almost time to get ready for school. He quickly put this new information at the back of his mind. She liked Stefan and Stefan liked her he wasn’t going to mess that up he would do anything to keep her happy and if Stefan made her happy then he was happy for them. That was a lie he knew it but this was the right thing to do. No one would know and he wouldn’t think about it this was the first and last time… or was it really?
