Chapter4: Moments like this

It was close to another summer with friends and family but this was far from Kat's mind. Tonight was her first dance and with her long time crush Stefan. Yet somehow it seemed as though it was the beginning of the end as well. Next year was 8th grade they weren't really kids anymore and this thought frightened her a little.

But for the moment she put those thoughts aside.

Her hair was tamed some what as her curls were pinned up fanning out elegantly behind her. Her mom even let her put on some eyeliner and eye shadow . She twirled around in her light blue ballerina type dress checking her every detail in the mirror before putting on her strawberry flavored lip gloss. She smiled at her reflection as nerves settled in her stomach giving her cheeks a slightly pink tinge to it. "You look ... Wow..," she heard a familiar voice say from her slightly ajar door. "Damon! You almost gave me a heart attack," she says a little breathless from shock. He smiles in return "Sorry Kat I came up to tell you Stefan is waiting for you," she nods hugging Damon as she makes her way downstairs towards the flashing camera's and her date waiting at the bottom.

He loops his arm in hers as she meets him at the bottom of the stairs. "You look like an angel Kat," he whispers to her as their parents take photos her cheeks become red but whispers a thank you in return. Stefan wore a black suit with a white shirt and a tie that matched her dress. She noticed as she got to look at him properly that his hair hung in his face some what instead of its usual spikey look. If she was telling the truth she wish he would keep his hair that way it suited him.

As they got out to the school gym which was transformed into a ballroom Stefan squeezed her hand lightly in reassurance. The room was filled with dancing 7th graders and soon with a little persuasion from Caroline they found themselves dancing , they switched partners , talked among themselves and finally at the end of the night the last slow song played.

As the soft melody played through out the gym Stefan found Kat in his arms again. "Its now or never," he thought as he looked down at the girl in his arms. "Kat?" He whispered voice shaken with nerves. She looks at him her eyes sparkling with something Stefan couldn't quite place. Slowly he moves closer towards her. Inches away he stops and waitS until she closes the gap he was always the gentleman.She tasted of her strawberry lip gloss and in that moment he could feel his whole body react to her close presence as if a warm blanket engulfed his entire body.

As they break away neither one says a word both to happy to spoil their moment but after a while the world invaded their bubble of complete bliss. It was time to leave arriving home Kat couldn't stop smiling her heart on super drive and her head in the clouds.

"Katherine," her mother said smiling sadly at her. "Mama?" she questioned worried. "Honey, Come sit with me in the kitchen," Katherine walks into the kitchen with uncertainty she sits down on a chair and her mother covers her hands with her own. "Mama what's wrong?" Her mother says nothing for a while before explaining what is about to happen. "Katherine you remember your twin sister Elena?" Kat nods her sister and her were separated at 3 after their parents divorce . They hardly connected as sisters as they rarely had been together if they were they would always disagree on things. Up until now she would have to spend the odd weekend or two at her fathers 3 towns away from Mystic Falls. "Well your father has called and he wants you to stay with him and Elena,"

Katherine shook her head disagreement. "Mama no I want to be with you ... What about my friends?" She began to sniffle. "Oh Katherine honey its just for 3 years if you don't like it there you'll come back after the 3 years are done," her mother cooed gently. "No! I want to stay here Mama please," Kat begged tears running down her cheeks. At this her mother hugged her child rocking her gently "Honey I don't want you to go but its our agreement Katherine. If I don't give him this 3 years he'll be granted full custody of you because I didn't follow through with our agreement and after that Elena will stay here for 3 years,"

It was as if everything froze for Katherine numbly she did her normal nightly routine. The only difference was her finding her way back into her mothers arms to fall asleep. What Miss Pierce didn't tell her daughter though was that Katherine was to leave in the next two days but she could not tell that now to her grieving bundle. This hurt her mother a lot more than she let on as for her this was the only child she had a strong connection to as Elena was never around. She watched Katherine grow up and now at 13 she had to say goodbye even if only for 3 years...

The next morning Kat was told of her soon departure, unable to handel all this at once. She excuses herself and willing her mother let's her go. She ends up with the Salvatore brothers a crying heap. They lead to her into the forest a well warn out path leading to a falls where they swam during the summer as kids. "Kat what's wrong?" Stefan was the first to talk taking his place at the right of her. They sat silently kicking their feet in the cool lake below the falls.

"They're taking me away Stefan my dad is taking me away for 3 years," she said whimpering at the thought. Suddenly everything seemed to stop as the two Salvatore brothers shared glances. Damon seemed somehow frozen in place as realization kicked in. Katherine's tears start tracking steadily down her flushed cheeks once more as she held tightly on Stefan's shirt. Her head tucked into his neck. Damon swallowed the lump that seemed to constrict his breathing as he spoke quietly "When?" His voice sounded robotic. "In two days time, I only have today because tomorrow I'll be packing," she whispered through her tears tucked into Stefan's side.

Stefan grips her tighter to his body putting her every inch to memory especially what it felt like to be consumed buy her warmth. Tears begin to fall down his cheeks as he thinks of her soon departure. They just found out they meant more to each other than what it seemed now she was leaving. They are so captured in pain they don't notice Damon has left.

His mind works in overdrive as he makes his way to Caroline's house from there they go to Bonnie's , Tyler, Klaus and Katherine's cousin Jeremy's house. He doesn't think too much as he explains their plan. They all nod in agreement but before they leave Damon speaks in warning as he says "No tears , this is for Kat don't remind her she's leaving. Tomorrow you can be sad and cry , do what ever you want tomorrow but tonight this is for Kat,"

They all nod in agreement even Caroline as she bites down on her bottom lip to stop it from trembling.

Tonight was for Kat ...
