he turned to look at me. "it's bonfire night. we wanted to invite you but you were out like a light." he scoffs, sipping his drink.

i sit beside him, with my hands across my knees. he looks me up in down in awe. "cute outfit." i smirk, i held out my hand to take his drink, he passes it towards me. "gentle with it."

i snicker, taking a sip, immediately spitting it out, newt bursts out with laughter, taking it back. "holy fucking hell! that's disgusting!" i groan, alerting the attention of the other boys.

one of the boys of whom i haven't met before stood a few feet from me. "you don't like my drink, huh?"

newt glanced at me then back to the boy. "it's pretty strong gally. and it's her first time with alcohol."

i make a disgusting face, trying to keep my laughter. "i've had my fair share of alcohol and if that's alcohol then i'm a boy because that tastes acidic. probably even poison."

everybody leered at me whether in envy to stand up to gally or fear. i brush my tongue with my fingers, trying to escape the burning sensation,

this jaw clenched, alby had to step in, keeping gally held back from rocking my jaw. i look towards him with a sly grin, taking on the challenge for next time.

the fire burns out and everyone had gone to bed for the night. once again leaving me alone with my own drowning thoughts.

i pace the floor for no need. what am i worrying about?
i still think about how i couldn't get that boy off of me and it's starting to effect me.

eventually i convince myself to go to sleep where i ponder my mind for the next hour until i drift off to sleep.

i was the last one to wake up and when i did i got dressed and made my way outside, still confused about how everything works here.
"morning, ella!" i hear newt shout from the distance.

i wave my hand to him, strutting over. he held out a bowl of porridge. i hate porridge. i try my best to keep a straight face whilst i'm eating it.
"have you thought about what you want your job to be?"

i look over him, stopping my eating. "i'm confused. a job?"
he nods, snickering. "everybody has a job here in the glade and it's based on your strengths."

my heart flutters, i love work. "what are the options?" i ask.

newt stares at me a sighed before saying. "well there's first in command, which is alby. there's second in command, i do as well as gardening. there are cooks, which frypan does. there's medjacks, clint is. there are a lot more but i don't think you'll like them, so what are you thinking."

i sat in silence. none of those i liked. i gulp, asking the dreadful question. "are you sure there's no jobs that require somebody who's really smart?"
newt raised his brow, shaking his head in confusion. "you're smart?" he lent forward, intrigued.

nodding my head. newt asked, "mind if i quiz you then?"
my face brightened up. "finally." i whispered.

i set my mind to the questions he asked, he asked around 20 and i got them all right. he lets out an exaggerated sigh. "i'll take it up with alby."

newt left the table and walked over to find alby.

the sky was beautiful today, the grass was waving just right towards me. i decided to go on an adventure until i come face to face with minho, of whom i met earlier. "where are you going?" he asks.

i point towards grey walls, attached to the maze. he shook his head, pushing me gently away from them. "don't touch me." i move his hands off of me. this alerted the others gladers.
"don't make a scene." he spoke.

alby walked over to us. "what's going on here?" minho spat. "she was trying to go into the maze." he then turned to newt. "i thought you told her?"
newt shook his head shamelessly.

i become nosy. "why can't i explore 'the maze'"

the glade went silent until minho spoke up. "it's way too confusing and complicated as well as dangerous for anyone who isn't a runner to go in."

i stood offended, i crossed my arms, challenging him. "i'm pretty sure i'm way smarter than anyone else here." minho scoffed at me. "alright. that's enough."

minho walked away, he muttered away. "go in there by yourself then. see how it is."
i heard his commands. i waited for the next morning at dawn when the walls opened.

i hid a bladed knife in my pocket and put a backpack on for the journey forward from me. i did my black hoodie up with the hood and made my way to the entrance.

the walls didn't taunt me. i wasn't afraid.

i cross my foot over the line and make a slow walk inside. i remove my hood as i continue my trip. there was vines hanging down the walls, it looked beautiful.

i snicker to myself. i wanted a better view, i grip my hands to the vines, clutching myself tightly and pulling my way up the wall.

a loud screech echoed. i stop my climbing and looking down, seeing a weird creature swinging against the vines. "fuck." i mutter climbing higher until i reached the top.

i walk backwards, to see if the creature had followed me. i take a breath of relief.
i stack it over a rock, groaning and rubbing my back from where i've fallen.

the large creature showed itself with its metallic claws. it become face to face with me. i froze before stumbling backwards by kicking one of its leg.

i start sprinting across the walls, until i make a wrong step and fall into a large pile of vines. i held my mouth with my free hand to keep quiet.

the croaks from its metallic mouth cracked above me, not seeing me as i'm beneath it now. my heart was racing harder than ever.
