"MY question is," Sandra started, kicking her feet up onto the dash as Frypan drove them along a road, passing a 'Mandatory Infection Check' sign with the sun rising behind them, "where did all these people go?" She looked over her shoulder to the backseat where Newt and Thomas were. "I mean, look at all the abandoned cars. The owners had to go somewhere."
"Maybe they're hiding in the hills," Newt suggested, looking out the window at the hills a distance away from them. "Or they probably just died."
"I don't know about that," Thomas murmured, leaning forward between Sandra's and Frypan's seats while pointing his finger ahead of them. "I've got a feeling they're hiding out near there."
Sandra looked forward, dropping her feet from the dash as Frypan slowed down the car, coming up to an area with more abandoned cars, a WICKED shipping container, and a tunnel that had a bricked building built above.
"Well, that's not creepy at all," Sandra mumbled, winding up her window as they passed the WICKED container and Frypan brought the car to a slow roll toward the tunnel entrance.
"Keep on alert," Thomas said once Frypan stopped the car, and opened his back door.
Sandra debated getting out after him before she grabbed her handgun from her bag and pushed the door open, stepping onto the dirt ground as did Newt and Frypan. She looked around them, her gun close to her side as they slowly walked forward and stopped a distance away from the tunnel.
"You want us to go in there?" Newt asked them as Frypan stopped beside Sandra.
"Surely there's another road," Sandra said, turning to Thomas who was looking down at the map in his hands.
"I don't wanna come across as too negative, but if I was a Crank, that's exactly where I would be," Newt stated, sending a pointed look to Thomas with his hand on his hip.
Thomas looked up from the map to look into the tunnel. "I don't think we have much of a choice."
"Well," Sandra muttered, biting on her lip, "we better keep the doors locked." And before Frypan could stop her, she reached over and snatched the keys out of his hand. "I'm driving!" she exclaimed, running back to the car as Frypan protested behind her.
"I get shotgun!" Newt shouted, following after her with a small chuckle.
Sandra smiled to herself, throwing the driver's door open before jumping in and closing the door just as Frypan reached for it. She quickly locked it, stopping him from opening it as she stuck her tongue out at him.
"Looks like your dreams do come true," Newt said, getting into the front seat when she put the keys into the ignition.
Thomas and Frypan got into the backseat as Sandra said, "Jorge told me himself that I'm a good driver, so I don't get why you three are so against me driving." She handed her gun to Newt, who happily took it.
"Jorge's your dad and literally calls you princess. Of course, he said you're a good driver," Thomas pointed out when Sandra moved the gearstick into gear before slowly taking her foot off the clutch and pressing the other down on the accelerator.
"All I can hear is you yapping like a dog," she grumbled, turning on the headlights as they slowly drove into the tunnel. "Can we just focus on getting the hell out of this tunnel?"
"Great idea," Frypan mumbled behind her as they drove deeper in, and Sandra turned on the other lights on the roof and the side of the car.
The tunnel was much darker than Sandra expected with a few cars littering the road, but thankfully there was enough space for her to drive through.
