I gritted my teeth before jumping out of the truck into the rain. My chest heaved. I had lived in La Push for fifteen years with no asthma or seizures, but a few weeks after I moved to California, the asthma started.

Then the seizures. They were minor at first, only lasting thirty seconds. But they got worse and nowadays they last around five minutes. But lately,  since I saw Jacob for the first time since I had been back, they came more often.

I looked at my surroundings; Aunt Sue's house was just down the road. I could see the red roof. I started off, but heard yelling behind me.

"Aiyana! Wait! You can't just walk around in the rain," Jacob yelled, running behind me.

"Jacob, get away from me!" I screamed, hugging my stomach with my arms as I walked faster. But he caught up to me, grabbing my waist and turning me around. I closed my eyes, refusing to look at him.

"Aiyana... What happened to you? You just disappeared last year. How long have you been back?" I opened my eyes and looked up at him. There was that same look from a moment ago in his eyes. And tears fell down my cheeks, mixing with the rain.

"I said, get away from me," I whispered. "I need to be with Seth and Leah right now." I turned again and walked toward their house. I was only two houses away now.

"Ana... I'm sorry," he said quietly, but I could still hear him. I shook my head and blinked rapidly.

As I walked up the steps to Aunt Sue's house, I almost couldn't bring myself to knock on the door. But when I did, it opened slowly.

"Ana... Please, come in, honey. God, you're soaking wet." Aunt Sue sniffled and pulled me inside. It was warm and I could hear heaters running somewhere in the house. The living room was empty and I shivered. Where were the kids?

"Aiyana!" Seth yelled out of nowhere. I looked up and saw him running through the hallway toward me. He was getting big.

He ran into me and I stumbled back a few steps. He wrapped his arms around my waist and my arms went around his shoulders.

"Oh, Seth. I'm so sorry," I whispered. He buried his face in my hair.

"Ana, I am, too." He looked up and his face was streaked with tears. My eyes widened and I shook my head, pulling him back to me.

Soon, Aunt Sue hugged us both to her. I was like her third child and she treated me as such. A second later, something hit me...

"Where is Leah?" I looked at them and they looked at each other, then toward the back door, which was open. The rain still poured and then I heard a wolf howl.

///////

It couldn't be. Of course I knew the legends about our people and I believed them. My father was on the council, for God's sake. I bolted for the back door with Seth hot on my heels. I called Leah's name until I got to the edge of the forest.

"Seth, where is she? She's all by herself! We have to help her!" I yelled at him, whirling around. He looked so sad in that moment. Then he started shaking violently and convulsing.

He fell to the ground and I heard a sickening noise. I looked down to see a grayish wolf had taken his place. He looked around with wide eyes, then ran into the forest. I yelled his name, but I couldn't see him. I fell to my knees and cried.

My family was falling apart; I had lost the love of my life a year ago, lost my uncle, my aunt would never be the same, and both of my closest cousins were wolves...

A/N: I think it's a good plot twist that Aiyana already knew about the wolves. Let me know what you think(:
