JASON APPROACHED THE BIG HOUSE WITH A SINKING FEELING IN HIS STOMACH. The place seemed harmless enough— a baby blue manor with a wraparound porch and whimsical wind chimes.
Yet, every fiber of his being screamed that he was on hostile territory.
Drew, a Camp member, tried to comfort him, but her overpowering scent and flirtatious demeanor only heightened his discomfort. She questioned him about Piper, a girl claiming to be his girlfriend, which added another layer of confusion to his already scrambled memories.
As Jason struggled to make sense of his situation, Chiron, a wise Centaur and Camp director, arrived. Initially appearing as a regular man in a wheelchair, Chiron soon revealed his true Centaur form.
His expression turned grave at the sight of Jason.
"You..." The Centaur's eyes flared like a cornered animal. "You should be dead."
Inside the Big House, Jason found himself amidst an indoor rainforest, strange masks, and even a stuffed leopard that seemed eerily alive. Chiron offered lemonade and began probing Jason about his past and the mysterious marks on his arm.
Despite his amnesia, Jason displayed an uncanny understanding of Latin and recognized Chiron's identity and the Camp's purpose. Chiron grew increasingly concerned, stating that Jason's presence could spell disaster.
Suddenly, time froze, and a dark mist emerged from the leopard's mouth, taking the form of a hooded woman.
She claimed to have known Jason since birth, revealing that he was a gift from his father to appease her. She demanded Jason to free her from her prison before sunset on the solstice, warning of dire consequences if he failed.
The dark woman dissolved, and the mist curled into the leopard's mouth.
Time unfroze. Seymour's howl turned into a cough like he'd sucked in a hairball. The fire crackled to life, the arcade machine beeped, and Chiron said, "—would dare to bring you here?"
"Probably the lady in the mist," Jason offered.
Chiron looked up in surprise. "Weren't you just sitting... why do you have a sword drawn?"
"I hate to tell you this," Jason said, "but I think your leopard just ate a goddess."
He told Chiron about the frozen-in-time visit, the dark misty figure that disappeared into Seymour's mouth.
"Oh, dear," Chiron murmured. "That does explain a lot."
"Then why don't you explain a lot to me?" Jason said. "Please."
Before Chiron could say anything, footsteps reverberated on the porch outside. The front door blew open, and Aurora, Annabeth, and another girl, a redhead, burst in, dragging Piper between them. Piper's head lolled like she was unconscious.
