The best way to survive life is living in denial. Hearing the truth, sometimes it’s worse than living without knowing. It’s better when you convince yourself that something is like you think it is. Living in denial protects you. It gives you a way to cope with reality.
But how do you deny the obvious?
Becky walks into the lobby and towards the elevator along with Billy and William, but as she looks who’s waiting for the same elevator, she tries to walk the other way.
“Um-I’ll take the stairs.”
Billy grabs her hands and pulls her back, pushing her ahead.
“You can’t avoid her forever. You have to work with her.”
“She’s with Faye. I don’t want to share a small space with both of them.” She whispers angrily.
As the elevator doors open, Freen and Faye step in, and as they turn around, Freen instantly locks her gaze with Becky. She gives her a small smile, while Becky is still standing outside with her breath stuck down her throat.“Are you coming in or not?”
Faye's voice is the most irritating thing Becky knows. She probably wouldn’t hate the girl so much if she wasn’t her ex’s wife, if she can even consider Freen her ex. But Freen apparently was still thinking about what she wanted because she’s been talking and spending time with Faye quite often without the two of them getting on each other’s throat.
Becky didn’t like it, of course. She would never think Freen could be happier with Faye. Maybe she was just being selfish. Maybe she just wanted Freen all for herself because she cared about her, but that’s how it is.
Becky shakes her head and gets in, followed by Billy and William.
Billy takes a look at Freen behind them and then at Becky. Then he clears his throat and puts on a show.
“Bec, are you still up for that club tonight?”
Becky looks at him, frowning in confusion, but judging by Billy's look, she knows he is lying to play dirty in front of Freen. Becky didn’t really want to do this just to spite her, but then she thought it was worth a try. If Freen showed any hint of reaction, that meant something, right? “Oh, sure. Is your friend you told me about still coming?”
“Yes she is.” Billy says, smirking proudly. He takes another glance at Hope, who was staring at Becky's back with a grimace of both pain and jealousy on her face, and he couldn’t be more pleased.
“What are you talking about? What club?” William asks, confused.
“It’s between us.” Billy says with a wide, playful smile.
As the elevator opens, Becky rushes out to walk to the locker room and change in her scrubs.
“Now we have to go to a club tonight?!”
“Her face was precious. Oh God, you should’ve seen her.”
“Wait, so no club tonight? Can we get pizza then?”
“Sure, Daddy will get you pizza, but then me and you are going clubbing.” Billy says, leaning against the locker.
“I don’t know.” Becky says, feeling weirdly agitated and insecure about this.
Was Becky living in denial? Should she stop believing there was any chance for her and Freen? That she could still choose her?
Since her last breakup and her messy life, Becky swore she would never put so much effort into something that would only slam the door to her face, but she believed that Freen was worth it.
