"Are you almost done Lana?" my mother shouted from the living room. "I'll be down in a minute mama!" I just finished filming and editing yet another self tape. The only thing I have to do now is send it. That part should be easy. Right?
Not really, I have been staring at the email that was ready to be sent for 10 minutes, but I just can't get myself to send it. I don't want to mess this up. My agent didn't tell me anything about the project, just that it was for a movie and sent me a monolog I had to do if I wanted to send my tape in.
"Sweetheart, what is taking you so long?" my mom entered my room and stood behind my chair. "Should I just delete the email?" I honestly don't know what to do right now. "What? Why would you do that?" she looked at me shocked by my words. "Mom, I don't know what to do. I don't know if the tape is good, or if I acted how I should've, you know that a lot of directors don't want to work with people that haven't had a lot of experience in the industry".
Acting has been very big passion of mine for a very long time now. I started acting in school plays when I was little, and my love for acting just grew bigger and bigger. My parents saw my passion, but didn't know what to do so that they can help nurture that passion. I started auditioning for commercials when I was little, did a few of those, I even got cast in a show, but it was canceled right before filming started because of covid. And now I'm here.
"Lana, I heard you from downstairs and you were great. Stop overthinking it. I know how passionate you are about acting, but if you don't send that tape, you can't do what you really love. This is the time for you to get out there and show them how talented you actually are" she is a master at giving pep talks I swear to God.
I took another glance at my laptop, and without another thought clicked send. "Oh my God I sent it" I put my hand over my mouth not knowing if it was the right thing to do. "There you go, that wasn't so bad. Was it?" she squeezed my shoulders in a reassuring way and left my room.
What the fuck did I just do. I should delete the email, maybe they didn't see it. Yeah, they didn't see it, I mean, it's a big project. Who knows how many emails the received.
As I was rethinking everything that just happened, my inbox refreshed, a new email popping up at the top of the screen. It was an email from Marvel. Why would they send me something. That's strange.
I opened the email, and scanned it quickly. "Dear Miss Bennett, thank you for submitting your audition. You will be contacted soon in regards of your audition. Have a wonderful day!"
Wait. WHAT? You're trying to tell me that I auditioned for Marvel and my agent didn't even tell me? Oh God. I have to call him.
The phone started to ring, and after a few rings it stopped and the voice of my agent boomed it my ear.
"Heyy, how's my friend doing today?" he is very happy, that great to hear. "Hey Andy, I'm good. One question though" "Shoot" "Why did I just get an email from Marvel thanking me for sending my audition?" there was silence on the other end of the line.
"Look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you what you were auditioning for. I just knew if I told you, you wouldn't have done it at all" "You could have at least given me a little heads-up. Don't you think?" This guy is so weird.
"You are absolutely right. And I'm very sorry." He's not sorry, I just know it. "Okay well, can you tell me now what I auditioned for?" I really wanna know what I just got myself into. "Yeah, sure. So it's for a movie and it's Marvel, obviously. And it follows the story of America Chavez after The Multiverse of Madness. Now, I don't know what roles there are, but just be patient, please. I gave them your email so that you can get updated about it."
Okay, I wasn't expecting that. "You got it Andy, thank you. I'll talk to you later, I have some stuff I need to do." "Okay little lady, talk to you later. Ciaoo" "Bye" Little lady? Where did that come from? I don't have time to think about that too.
I went downstairs and saw my mom and dad on the couch watching some show that was on tv, guess he got home while I was talking to Andy. "Hey kiddo!" he stood up and gave me one of his signature bear hugs. "Hey dad, how was work?" "It was okay, boring as usual, what about you?" "It was good, I sent in a self tape for a movie, other than that nothing really happened"
"Ooo, you have to tell me all about it" he is very supportive of my decision to pursue acting.
"How about we have dinner first, and then you can talk about it?" my mom said from the couch since it was dinner time. "Sure mom, is there anything I can help you with?" "You can set the table, I just have to take the casserole out of the oven, and that's it."
I went into the kitchen so I could get the plates and utensils to set the table. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that I audition for a Marvel movie without even knowing, but who knows, maybe something good comes out of all of this. At least I hope it does.
