The party came to a close. No one could find the culprit responsible for poisoning the queen, but Harry knew. She decided to keep silent about it for the time being. She was still having a difficult time processing the information. Little by little, the pieces slowly began to come together.
Varian's hostility towards her family had always been there. The most recent being his anger with Henry due to his firework display. He had been lying to Harry the whole time. She wondered what else he lied about. Truthfully, she didn't want to know, but she knew she'd have to find out.
The next morning, she waited for the multiple doctors the king had called to leave. She walked into her mother's room. The king was by Caroline's side in a chair. He had his head lowered, holding her hand in his.
"Oh, Caroline," he muttered.
Harry stood in the doorway; she let the king have his moment before knocking on the door. "How is she?" she asked tirelessly.
The king's body jolted. "Harry," he called startled. His expression went back to a saddened one. "The doctors said the poison's main purpose isn't to kill the queen but, rather, to make her sleep." Harry waited for the king to elaborate before saying anything. "She'll simply sleep her life away unless we can find a cure."
Harry was startled. That poisoned glass had been meant for her. Varian had meant to make her sleep forever. She felt a headache coming on.
"Can the doctors make a cure?" she asked.
The king hesitated before answering, "Unfortunately, none of them know how to deal with this type of poison."
Harry felt her heart drop. "What do you mean this type of poison?"
"The poison isn't originally from this kingdom." He looked defeated before he finished. "It's from a kingdom that no longer exists."
Harry looked as if she had been slapped in the face. She looked down at her mother. Indeed, she looked like she was sleeping. Harry couldn't bear to keep looking at her.
"Is there anything you need at all?" she asked, trying hard to conceal her sadness.
The king shook his head. Of course, the only thing he needed was for Caroline to wake up again, that was all Harry needed too. She wanted to run into her mother's arms and cry. She wanted her mother to pat her on the head and tell her everything was going to be okay just like she used to when Harry was a child.
Harry gave the biggest smile she could muster and left the room. She hurried down the halls. She needed to tell someone who the culprit was. She needed to tell them what Varian had done. She decided to go out and get some fresh air to clear her head.
Harry sat down by the flowers. The smell of roses helped her to relax. She thought being alone for a while would be able to help her, but unfortunately, the loneliness didn't last long.
"Princess?"
Harry flinched; she knew that voice well. It was Terrance. She turned around to see him standing inches behind her.
"Are you okay, Princess?" he asked worriedly.
"Lord Terrance?" she asked nervously.
"Just Terrance will do," he replied with a smile. "Are you alright?"
As much as she desperately wanted to say she was, she didn't have it in her to act like nothing was wrong.
"No," she mumbled. "I'm not okay."
Terrance got on one knee and asked in a gentle voice, "Do you want to talk about it?"
She did, but she didn't want to with Terrance.
"It's okay; you don't have to force yourself to say anything to me." He sat down beside her. "We can just sit here unless you don't want me here."
Harry thought she wanted to be alone, but now that a kind person was sitting beside her, she didn't want him to leave. If he was beside her, then she might have the confidence to tell Kahil everything.
"Can we sit here for a moment?" she asked timidly.
Terrance gave her the warmest smile as he answered, "Of course."
Harry took the time to sit and recharge. Varian was gone, he had betrayed her, but there was still time to set everything right again. If she could find out why he hates her family so much, then she might be able to stop his plan for revenge. Harry took a few deep breaths before standing up.
"Is the princess leaving already?"
Harry gave him a genuine smile.
"Yes, you came to see my brother, didn't you?"
Terrance let out a laugh. "That's correct! He called me over to discuss the events from last night's party."
"Were you there?"
Terrance's smile faded. "No," he answered. "But I heard the story. I offer my deepest condolences. I hope the queen wakes up soon."
"Me too," Harry replied.
Terrance then stood up. "I hope to see you soon, Princess."
Harry gave him a small nod. She hoped she would see Terrance again later. It would definitely make talking to Kahil easier with someone like Terrance by her side. Before she went and to talk to Kahil, she needed to visit Joseph. If anyone had a solution to her problems, it would be him.
