Manic woke up, and not to the best feeling. His chest hurt, a lot. But the thing that hurt the most was his throat. It felt like it was burning.
"A-Are you sure? He can't even make noise?" That was Miss Elinor. "Yes, I'm... I'm awfully sorry." A random voice said. It was rough yet kind, Manic observed. He opened his eyes and saw Miss Elinor looking at him, a shocked look on her face. "Manic! Oh dear, are you alright?" Manic opened his mouth to reply with 'Just my throat.. and my chest a bit...' but it never came out. The rabbit in front of him froze up, before calming back down. "Oh, honey... I forgot.. y-you.." She paused, looking down with her brows knit together in worry. "You're mute now. You can't talk.." Manic gaped at her. He gingerly touched his throat, and tears formed in his eyes.
Manic woke up. For real this time.
He groaned (it was more of a guttural noise) and sat up. It was his 11th birthday.
Wait.
It was his 11th birthday.
He smiled, hopping off the bed. He was finally old enough to join the group of cool boys that always hang out by the trash bins!! Well... Miss Elinor said they would be a 'bad influence' but ever since the leader said he could join when he was 11 a couple years back he just couldn't say no! Oops, he was rambling. Again...
In his head.
Manic put on his black, plain shoes and headed downstairs. He saw Miss Elinor serving rations to the other children, only a scoop of scrambled eggs each, so everyone could get some. Manic respected that. Well, he respected Miss Elinor a lot. Of all the people at the orphanage she was the only one who would listen to him. Or could listen to him.
She was the only one who knew sign language, as she had learned it when she was younger and taught Manic it later on. She noticed him, and smiled warmly. "Did you sleep well?" She asked, scooping another bit of the eggs onto a child's plate. Manic nodded, grabbing a small plate from the stack. "Happy birthday, dear!" She put extra onto his plate. 'There's no need to do that, ma'am, save some for the others.' He signed, sighing at her antics. "It's your birthday!! Why wouldn't I?" She chuckled, pushing him along the line. "Deal with it, birthday boy." Manic smiled at her, and quickly went to sit down at his age group table.
"Hey, Manic! Happy birthday!" Richard, a white rabbit, exclaimed, sitting next to Manic as well. Manic smiled, 'thank you' he mouthed, hoping Richard would understand. "Mhm!" He replied, seemingly able to read his lips. 'Want some? Miss Elinor gave me extra.' He mouthed again, attempting to put some of his eggs on Richard's plate. Richard tilted his head, but understood when Manic tried to give him the eggs. "O-Oh, sure! Thanks so much, Manic! You really don't have to." Manic shook his head, 'just being nice.'
Man, how much he wanted to talk again.

Sonic entered Sector 21, seemingly going deeper into the sectors, he realized. His journey had been going on for quite some time, as he tried to find... someone who... cared about him, he guessed? A friend? Ever since he found the flickies dead in the morning a couple days back he just wanted somebody who could talk to him and.. and be someone he could rely on. Like the flickies.
Sector 21, though, didn't seem like the friendliest place. Citizens scowled at him, continuing on with their day. Sonic sighed, looking around to see someone friendly. This was such a bad idea. What was he thinking? Was he that childish? He can't just walk into a place and expect to find his forever friend and-
He heard a whine.
Sonic turned around to his right, the whine coming from the alleyway before him. Sonic looked to see if someone was watching before stepping into the dark place. He squinted as he got closer, seeing a small figure. "Hey, are you okay? I just heard you and-" The figure visibly jumped. Sonic took another step forward. "Hey, I'm not going to hurt you." He whispered. "I promise." He held his fist to his chest, like he saw the people do on the magic black and white portals. He tried jumping in them before. He almost got put in prison, but it's the thought that counts!
The figure moved a bit. Sonic took another couple of steps, and he began to see the features of the kid. Kid? He looked more like a small baby. The kit was so skinny, he looked horrible and on the verge of literal death. He was a brownish fox, but he was beginning to turn yellow. He also...
He had two tails.
The kid seemed to have noticed him looking at them, and protectively curled around them. "I'm not gonna touch 'em, I promise." Sonic crouched in front of the small child. The kid's pupils were pinpricks, but began to grow a little. Sonic couldn't help but feel bad for the child. He was like him, in a way. There was just one catch. He seemed to have not eaten in days. Sonic frowned. Even he was able to eat some kind of slop the Sector he lived in had. "Hey, how long since you've ate, kid?" The child shivered and stared at him. "I-I dunno.. mebbe a couple of days ago." He said in a hoarse voice. Sonic's eyes widened. "Why haven't you had anything to eat?"
"I can't walk." The kid immediately covered his mouth like he said some sort of a curse. Sonic's heart tightened in sympathy. Of course the kid looked starved to death, he hadn't even be able to go and grab anything. It's a miracle he's even alive.
"There's nothing wrong with that." Sonic replied, forcing a smile onto his face even though he wanted to scream and cry. Why would the world do this child so horrible? The fox looked up at him, and Sonic saw that he lit up with something of joy. He smiled, just a bit, and the tips of his tails rose. "Y' really t'ink so?" The child asked, leaning forward toward Sonic. The hedgehog's smile turned into a genuine one. "Yes, there is nothing wrong, and it's not your fault. Anyone who tells you it is has no brains!" Sonic exclaimed, watching as the kid lit up more and more. For some reason, that just made Sonic happier. "Say, I've been looking for a friend.. and I think you're an amazing choice! One that could not be passed by the gods, even! Chaos himself!" Sonic said, as the child began jumping slightly. "Well, y' must be th' angel I prayed for, which is a gift in itself!" The kid exclaimed, looking up at Sonic in awe. Sonic's heart twisted again. "Nah, I couldn't be an angel even if I tried. I'm too naughty." Sonic winked, and the scruffy kid just giggled.
"Say, I never got your name!" Sonic said, sitting after getting tired of kneeling. The kid's mouth was shaped like an 'o' before he answered. "It's.. Miles. But I don' like it." Miles said, twirling the fur in his tails with his finger, which Sonic now noticed had no glove covering it. "Hmm.." Sonic pondered for a moment. He couldn't call the kid a name he didn't like. Sonic's eyes drifted to the twin tails, and he got an idea. "How's about Tails! Y'know, because you have two tails!" The kid seemed to shrink. "Oh, no, I mean because they're awesome! Really special!" Sonic smiled, hoping he didn't sadden the kid. The kid's features brightened again. "I lik' it!" He exclaimed, and Sonic grinned. "C'mon now, we can't stay here forever.." Sonic thought about what to do about the no walking issue. "Do ya... mind if I carry you?" Sonic asked, placing out the palm of his hand for the child. Tails looked up at him, then down at his hand, and gingerly placed his paw in it.
Sonic let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, before carefully picking up Tails, not wanting to hurt him. As Sonic held the child, he truly realized how small he was. He looked 2-3 years old, but was way smaller than what your normal 3 year old should be. Sonic sighed, and began his way out of the Sector. It was no good to stay in the same place that the child had been disregarded for so long. As Sonic began his journey from the Sector, the fox in his arms fell to sleep.
Sonic could just tell that this was his forever friend.
