Isabelle couldn't help but cheer as she glided through the skate park. After a long summer of Robby teaching her to skate, she finally became confident enough to ride alone.
"You're doing amazing," Robby yelled across the skate park.
She turned to see him smiling at her so hard that his dimples were showing. It was a distracting sight. It was a hot summer day towards the end of August in the San Fernando Valley, which led to him stripping his shirt off to try to cool down. It wasn't Isabelle's fault that he looked that good under the sun. The same sun, which was showering Robby with its golden light, made him appear angelic.
She admired the sight of him as she replied, "I know! I'm a master at–"
That's when she slammed straight into another person, both hurtling to the ground. Closing her eyes, she anticipated the brutal hit of the ground.
"Ugh," the stranger groaned from below her.
Opening her eyes, she realized she had landed directly on him. She hurriedly scrambled off of him while muttering multiple apologies.
"I am so so so sorry," She extended her hand to help him up.
The boy laughed, "No worries. I guess you aren't the expert you thought you were."
Isabelle blushed as she remembered what she was saying before slamming into the boy.
"I guess I still have lots of to learn. First on the list, watching where I'm going."
The boy smiled, "Well, you definitely made an impression. I'm Miguel, and I just moved here." He extended his hand to shake hers.
"Nice to meet you, Miguel. I'm Isabelle," she replied while grabbing his hand.
At that moment, she felt someone grab her arm. She let go of Miguel's hand and turned to face Robby. The second she turned to him, he checked her over for injuries. He even grabbed her hands to ensure no scrapes between her fingers.
"You ok? I saw you fall and wanted to make sure you were good."
"I'm fine. I actually had a very soft landing, considering I landed on Miguel."
"Who?" he asked when he finally finished checking her over.
Isabelle gestured to Miguel, "Robby, meet the boy that cushioned my fall, and Miguel, meet my skating teacher, from whom I obviously need more lessons." She stated as she flipped her silvery white hair over her shoulder. When she fell, it all tumbled from her claw clip, letting her wavy curls cascade down her shoulders.
Robby shifted his gaze towards Miguel and nodded at him. He didn't say anything; he just stared at him. Miguel just nodded back. The silence seemed to stretch between them, making the atmosphere incredibly awkward.
Finally, Isabelle broke the tension, "Well, it was great to meet you, Miguel, but it's getting late, and I have to head home. Give me your number, and maybe I can show you around, new kid."
She handed him her phone so he could add his number. When he gave the phone back, she entered his contact name as New Kid.
Robby scoffed as he grabbed their skateboards and started heading to her car.
"See ya around, New Kid," she yelled back towards Miguel before quickly following Robby.
When they reached her car, she turned to him and asked, "Do you want a ride home?"
"Please, if you don't mind," he replied as he opened the passenger door to your car.
She starts heading towards his house, where she spent most of her summer.
"School is going to start soon," she said as she gazed toward him.
He chuckles, "Sadly, I will miss spending every day with you."
"So will I. But we'll still see each other, right?"
"Of course, Belle. I wouldn't dream of going too long without you." He tilted his head while smirking. "I mean, I obviously still have to keep teaching you so you don't keep falling onto random guys."
She gasps in fake hurt, "This is the only time it has ever happened."
She parked in front of his apartment complex before reaching over the center console to push his shoulder in retaliation to his earlier statement.
"I'm serious, Robby. I don't want us to lose contact because we'll both be busier. Promise to keep contact?" she murmured.
"I promise."
"Good. I also hope you know I'm here if you need me."
"I know." He grabs his skateboard and then closes the car door.
Isabella watches as he walks into his apartment complex, and she receives a text. She opens her phone to find a text from New Kid. Smiling, she pulls out of Robby's apartment complex to head home. Isabelle is dreading the end of summer, especially with school starting soon. But she's not worried it'll probably be another boring school year.
