Sebastian's Perspective
Thunder rumbled overhead, grey skies coating the evergreen forest around me. Within a blink, raindrops were falling in quick streams from above. I was soaked from head to toe before I even took my first step.
My white shirt clung to my wet skin, my pants soaking, shoes squelching on the muddy forest floor. The air should be frigid, autumn at its peak with orange and red leaves littering the forest—a forest I did not know. Yet, there was warmth woven with the wind ruffling my wet hair, blanketing me against the chill.
I perked up when I found the reason why.
A melody.
It was a piano melody, ebbing and flowing like a summer ocean, somehow blanketing me against the harsh weather. It was soft with a feeling of diffused daylight through windows.
Through the thicket of bushes and trees, I could not make out where it was coming from. So, I followed it.
Each step brought me closer to the sound, and with each step, the song crescendoed into a bigger story of some sort. Whoever was playing expressed deep feelings of hurt. Through a song that told none of it, only joy.
How was that possible? How could I hear such hurt in a song meant to be heard with joy?
And so I walked faster and faster until I broke into a run like I was running out of time though I did not know why. It was calling to me. That, at least, I knew in my heart.
The song had changed into something more mellow, yet I did not stop. I let the song carry me to its spot.
I could've sworn I felt a tear run down my face. I couldn't control it.
But there was no time to wipe my cheek as I palmed a branch and ducked under it, finally finding a piano in the middle of a wildflower meadow. My breath got caught in my throat as I paused, trying to make sense of why the song had brought me here. Trying to make sense of why I knew in my heart to follow it. Why it had brought me there.
I wasn't even sure if someone had been playing it. There was no time at all.
White mist had covered the forest floor when I found the source of the melodies, drowning in a haze until I couldn't see in front of me.
