It wasn't until long after Lonnie and Jane had left did Holly and Mal remember that they were supposed to be getting information on the wand and how to get it. "I can't believe we let ourselves get distracted!" Holly snapped, degrading herself.
"It's okay to have a little fun, girls," Evie said trying to calm them down. They were both so high strung all the time, Especially Holly.
"No, we were made to get everyone off the isle and that's what we're going to do," Mal said in the same self-deprecating voice that Holly had used. "It's our only purpose."
They would not be failures again.
Mal rapidly flipped through the spell book as fast as she could, not even looking up when Carlos entered also frustrated. Holly broke her angry search for helpful magic to ask him what was wrong, "I asked what the coronation was all about hoping that maybe we could slip into the museum while everyone was focused on Ben and they all just looked at me like I was stupid for not knowing," he growled clenching and unclenching his fist. Holly pulled him into her unnaturally warm embrace letting him calm down. Holly's hugs always made him feel safe, they were the polar opposite to the temperature of Hell Hall and always reminded him that he wasn't home, he was with someone who really cared for him.
While she calmed Carlos down to keep him from breaking something or getting triggered into a panic attack, it could be either or at this point, all three could hear Mal muttering. Words stuck out like crazy, proud, father, mother, and angry. Otherwise, the seemingly insane muttering was undistinguishable.
Jay walked in showing off his new tourney jersey in a particularly good mood, Hadie was with and had a guitar case strapped to his back. "I have no idea how this happened," he said looking rather surprised. "I own a guitar now," he pulled it off his back and set it down by the door before slumping over onto his oldest sister's bed and petting Cerberus.
"Did your plan work with Jane are you going to see the wand?" Jay asked.
Mal groaned, "Do you think we would be going through every spell in this book if we hadn't completely struck out." Holly had long since stopped looking over her shoulder, but Mal was so used to saying we that it just came out.
"Ooo someone's mad," Hadie snickered.
"I'm not letting mom down," Mal told him. Under anyone else she would have held back that declaration so openly. Especially the calm and patient tone she used with her brother. She had all but admitted just now that the three were siblings and to anyone else she would deny any relation to Hades, but the three present already knew so there was no need to hide her fondness for the boy. Holly had made it a point to trust Carlos and Jay with that information when they had becoming friend with the boys.
Holly sighed her arms still around Carlos, "I'd rather us not disappoint dad either, he's there against his will."
"We can do this," Jay interrupted their girls self-deprecation, "if we stick together."
Mal and Holly nodded the former not seeing his inner battle, "and we won't go back till we do cause we're rotten," Holly stated, she need to remind him who he was, or this would never work. She didn't want to force Jay to do anything, but she wanted to save her dad more.
"To the core," they all finished.
Evie then remembered something she learned from Doug, "Oh, yeah. I found out that fairy godmother blesses Ben with the wand at coronation and we all get to go. I have nothing to wear, of course," they all looked at her like she was crazy. "What?"
"Okay will someone explain what a coronation is for the love of gods," Carlos grumbled. Sometimes they forgot how sheltered he was growing up, or rather stuck and abused.
