What Happens In The Dark

CHAPTER 19

Maya blinks back sleep from her eyes, stretching out in her bed with a soft yawn. She sits up in bed for a minute, not moving to get out of it, thinking about the day before, about Andy's surprise arrival. Andy who is now in her house...Andy who she knows for a fact will not drop the subject of Maya going home. She flops back into her pillows with a sigh.

10 minutes later she decides she should face the music - literally. She can hear music playing in the kitchen, suggesting Andy is already up and making herself at home. With a heavy sigh she gets up and puts on some sweatpants, making her way downstairs.

Andy hears Maya's approaching footsteps and slides a cup of coffee to the end of the kitchen counter just as she rounds the doorway "morning" Andy smiles.

"Um, yeah, morning" Maya mumbles in return.

Andy points at the coffee "drink, and stop being grumpy." She says with a smirk.

Maya rolls her eyes, but takes the coffee and sits at the Island and sips at it. She puts down the coffee fiddling with the handle of the mug, she clears her throat "um... Andy?" She starts tentatively.

Andy turns to look at her "hmm?"

"How, um... Carina. How is she?" she rushes out quickly before she loses her nerve.

Andy fixes her with a look "other than SERIOUSLY pissed?" She says with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah. Apart from that." Maya says with her head hung low.

Andy moves towards her and takes a seat at the island next to Maya with a coffee of her own "Well like I said she is SUPER pissed. Like so pissed she won't see or talk to any of us anymore, because she refuses to hear anything about how we were still looking for you."

"Wow, don't sugar coat it." Maya scoffs bitterly.

Andy smirks "what do you expect?" Andy sighs before continuing "she is also sad. She wants nothing to do with us because to think about you hurts her so fucking much. And there is only 1 reason for that." She says looking pointedly at Maya.

"What's that?" She asks bitterly.

Andy touches her arm to get her to look at her, when she does she says "it's because she still loves you. And because she still loves you, there is still a chance for you guys. But only if you come home, before it really is too late. Before she moves on." Andy says praying that the idea of Carina loving someone else is enough to get her to take action.

Instead Maya scoffs "yeah right. She isn't gonna wait around forever... and after what I did, what I put her through. No way she will forgive me." She says weakly.

Andy shakes her head "only 1 way to find out for sure Maya. Can you honestly see yourself living the rest of your life knowing you didn't at least try to get her back?"

"I can't get her back. I have made my peace with the fact that she is no longer in my life." Maya says.

Andy rolls her eyes "that's such shit and you know it."

"JUST DROP IT." Maya raises her voice.

Andy raises both her hands in silent surrender, knowing she has to play her cards right else she risks Maya closing down and shutting her out again. "Fine, I won't mention her again." She shrugs.

A few minutes of silence pass before Maya speaks again "What happened with the investigation? After I left?" She asks.

Andy looks at her surprised, "you don't know?"

Maya shakes her head "That was the main reason I left my phone - I couldn't relive it, I couldn't sit in a stuffy room and tell them what happened, I couldn't relive and talk through. So I made sure they couldn't get a hold of me to ask me to..." She trails off, a lone tear sliding down her cheek.
