(Y/N) practiced basketball, they sighed as they thought that it would be useless to continue as they were getting no better. They threw the ball to the side, annoyed with themselves. Luz was always better than them at everything, despite being a human herself, she always seemed to succeed at everything, whether it be normal human stuff or a witch. It didn't matter, she always won.
The young teen looked at the ball, Luz could do magic, and they couldn't even play a simple game. Suddenly a weight was placed on the seat next to them, (Y/N) looked up to see Gus sitting with two cotton candies in his hands.
"Hey (Y/N)! You seemed a little down, so I got you this!" He handed the human the cotton candy, it had both flavors, blueberry, and strawberry. (Y/N) smiled and took the treat and began to eat it with a slight down expression.
"Thanks, Gus, you really do know how to make me feel better," Gus smiled with a blush that (Y/N) failed to notice. He looked away and asked.
"What's gotten you so down?" The human glanced at him then back at the ball.
"It's..I seem to always fail at anything I do, it doesn't matter if it's a human thing or witch or whatever other creature activity it is..I always fail.." Gus frowned.
"I'm sure you can succeed if you just practice hard enough! You can do lots of other great things as well!" Gus said happily, (Y/N) ate a piece of the cloud-like treat and sighed.
"But no matter what I do, I always fail, I practice and practice and still end up failing..Luz always seems to get it the second time.."
"She can do magic.." (Y/N) pulled out paper and a pencil and drew a symbol as Luz did. (Y/N) tapped the paper, and nothing happened.
"And I can do a knockoff of what she does..." Gus suddenly spoke up.
"(Y/N)..look at me." The human did as told and looked into the witch's eyes. The teen then placed both hands on each of their shoulders, startling (Y/N) a bit."
"It doesn't matter what Luz does. What matters, is that you try! You get so worked up about things and people you care about, but once you see that you don't succeed the first try, you give up.." Gus looked away as a blush spread on his cheeks.
"You are a kind and sweet human. And that's what I admire about you. What you don't have..is the motivation to keep trying, and that's what you need! Some motivation!" Gus stoop up and finished his treat from earlier.
"C'mon, why don't we give it a try?" He asked as he extended his hand toward the human. A blush spread on (Y/N)'s cheeks, they chuckled and took his hand.
"You're right." Gus pulled them up and smiled.
"Let's give it a try.
...
It had been some time since Gus and (Y/N) had talked at the field, they both hung out regularly right after. Gus didn't want to admit it, but he had a crush on the human.
The human didn't want to admit it but, they had also gained a crush on Gus.
Today was the day, the day Gus revealed their feelings.
The two best friends were sitting on a bench, cooling after a basketball game.
"So, in your call, you said that you had something to tell me?" (Y/N) asked, Gus fiddling around with his hands nervously.
"Um..yes there is.." the nervousness of Gus made (Y/N) slightly worried, so, as a way to try to comfort him, the human put a hand on his shoulder.
"You seem pretty nervous about it, chill out bro. You can tell me anything." Gus looked at the human, a blush growing red. The witch sighed and stood up.
"(Y/N)..I know I'm just a friend but.. recently...I started to like you, more than friends..and I was wondering..would you..like to go out some time?" Gus looked back at the human, they had shocked expressions on their face. After a moment of silence, Gus sighed and looked down.
"I guess not-" a kiss on the lips cut him off, his eyes widened to see (Y/N) kissing him. The human quickly pulled and looked away.
"S-sorry..I was..sorry.." Gus was frozen in shock. (Y/N) smiled nervously and looked back at the witch.
"Well, I'll see you later bye!" The human ran off, Gus touched his lips and smiled. Guess he himself just needed some motivation...
