"Will, go," Luke called out at him, the spear still protruding from his stomach. The ring of crimson continued to spread, leeching further across the white uniform he wore.
"No, I can't leave you," He cried, desperately trying to help his friend stop the bleeding. The red liquid ran across his fingers, warm substance that made him want to throw up.
"Will," his friend said in a warning tone."WILL!"
The pain was there before Luke could finish his warning, rippling through his shoulder. He could barely make out the tip of the spear which now was buried deep in his shoulder blade. He made no noise, he couldn't. The soundless scream tore apart his throat, reverberating in his skull. His voice was gone as he grappled embarrassingly at the metal that was embedded in his skin.
Get out.
Get out.
Get out.
I have to help him, please I have to help him.
Looking back down to where Luke was laying, the spot was empty.
A cold laugh sounded behind him and he turned his head. "Oh poor William, you never do listen do you?"
General Castellan was now standing behind him, hands on the shaft of the spear.
"What are you-" The spear dug deeper into his shoulder and this time he cried out in pain, his silent cries reaching deafer ears. Black and white spots started to dot his vision, and he was quite aware of the blood that was cascading from the hole in his back.
"You really should learn that you are alone in this world William."
It was suddenly cold, Will felt the sheets being torn off of him. Hands grabbed him and yanked him from the bed. "What the fu-"
"Get up, William, we're going to the border today," Of course it had to be him. Wiping sleep from his eyes, he barely had time to watch as the Prince slipped out of the door. "We're leaving in 5 minutes, so help me gods you better be down in the courtyard by then."
Still confused, he tried to regain his composure, only to hear Paolo start laughing.
"Wow, he really hates you. He came in here just to mess with you, couldn't have sent General Jackson in or something," His roommate was nearly on the floor he was laughing so hard.
"Yeah that's just who I wanted to see when I woke up, the face of that asshole."
"Careful, he could hear you. Monsters like that have supersonic hearing, did you learn nothing from the fairytales when you were younger?"
"Must not have, he's too scary to be in a children's book. Would have given all the kids nightmares if he was."
"That's true," Paolo smiled, relaxing back onto his elbows to watch him get ready. The door banged once more, several swears slipping through with the threat to hurry outside. "Seem's the wicked witch of the west is calling you, hate to already lose a roommate this soon."
Will grimaced, pulling on his sandals before running to the door. Paolo grabbed his wrist before he could slip out. He looked down to meet eyes of concern boring into his. "Good luck. Stay safe. Please."
"I will, don't worry," he promised mindlessly. That seemed to satisfy Paolo's concern, but Will still didn't truly understand what was bothering him that much. Shaking it from his head, he slipped out the doors and down to the courtyard where he was told to go.
Evidently, he was the last to show up, being met with the sight of nearly 100 foot soldiers and several generals gathered around the Prince. As he made his way into the courtyard, the Prince rolled his eyes.
"Finally, the sleeping mess decides to join us."
"Finally? You said be down here in 5 minutes, I made it down here in two," He retorted, but the Prince did not seem to care, instead turning around to address the crowd.
"Take him as an example of what not to do. Now, let's get going. Gods knows the sleeping mess has delayed us long enough."
Everyone began to file out of the courtyard behind the Prince, down the streets of Aruma.
"You have to give him some grace at some point," Will whipped his head to look at the source of the voice, it was Jackson himself. "He's not actually a bad person, he's been through a lot. Not saying everything is justified, just don't go off of your initial gut opinion of him."
"Why do you even serve him?" Will shot back before he could stop himself. "You could easily just live your life outside the palace. Gods knows generals are paid enough for their work, so you could find a place in the city far away from this hellhole to live."
His eyes flashed with a strange sadness before he responded. "I made him a promise that I failed to keep. And now I am just trying to make it up to him, I owe him that much."
"You don't owe him anything, what has he ever done to deserve something from you?"
The general shook his head sadly, casting a look towards the fading figure of the Prince. "That is for him to tell you, not me. Maybe someday you will be close enough to him to understand."
"Over my dead body, respectfully General."
He got a smile from this. "Percy, please, call me Percy. I'm tired of sounding above others by being referred to as general. I'm only better than one other person, and it's Chase over there," He nodded his head towards where a girl sat on a horse not too far from where they were standing.
"I heard that, Seaweed brain. Don't give the newbie wrong ideas about me, I'll gladly beat your ass any day of the week."
"Sure, Wise-girl, sure you will," He laughed, getting flipped off as a response. "Be careful with her, she's amazing but she could kill you in an instant."
Will smiled in response, not knowing what to say. They fell into a comfortable silence, only broken up periodically when Percy decided to do something stupid to entertain himself.
And by midday, they had reached the border.
