You looked up at the large, familiar building towering in front of you, darker than all the other buildings around it. The Port Mafia headquarters. The one and only home you had.
As you entered, you were met by Kouyou, sitting in the lobby, looking very worried. She didn't seem to notice you at first as she was talking to someone on the phone. Quietly, you sat down beside her on the black leather couch, placing your arms on the backrest while listening to the conversation the red haired woman was having. She was nodding repeatedly, humming from time to time or answering with an "I understand".
Trying to guess what she was losing her head over, you recalled all the missions from recently. Just as you were doing that, Kouyou ended her call and sighed before turning towards you. As if she was reading your thoughts, she started to talk without a greeting or whatsoever.
"Kyouka didn't return from her latest mission. Akutagawa lost the connection to her phone."
Honestly, that didn't surprise you. Kyouka was Akutagawa's other, real, apprentice who he was actually training with. She was fourteen, a year younger than you. You sometimes joined them in their training. It was like a replika of Dazai's training that Akutagawa himself experienced. Harsh, brutal, unsympathetic.
Sometimes you felt relieved that you had this affect on others so they couldn't help themselves but be fond of you. As annoying as that was most of the time, it came undoubtably with benefits.
"Not really surprising if you ask me. This girl is no fan of the Port Mafia."
Of course, that statement earned you a sharp glare from Kouyou, something that you not got that often. But Kouyou adored KYouka just as much as she adored you. That was why her harsh gaze made you flinch slightly.
"A flower that only blossoms in the darkness won't survive in the light of the day."
You sighed, defeated. You weren't going to argue with Kouyou. Not even Mori did that and he was the boss.
"Of course. But that's not what I meant. I was just saying that with the way she was treated by some people here, I could fully understand why she would take her chance and leave."
Now it was Kouyou's turn to sigh.
"I'm just worried about her. The world of light is a tempting offer but it's not meant for everybody. Not for you, not for me, not for Kyouka."
"Still, impressive she actually managed to leave the Port Mafia unharmed. That makes her the first one as far as I know."
An unreadable expression flashes across Kouyou's face, but only for a moment, a too short amount of time to actually understand it. Then she spoke up again.
"We don't know if she actually left. All we know is that she didn't return from her latest mission."
You only nodded, standing up from the couch and stretching your limbs.
"Well, I better get going. I'll probably have something to do today."
Kouyou nodded in return, a small smile appearing on her face as she stood up as well and placed her hand on my head.
"Then I hope you a pleasant day. Don't get yourself killed."
You wandered through the familiar corridors, through which you already strolled hundreds and thousands of times already, knowing ever inch of the facade and every brick in the wall. With your hands buried in the pockets of your dress pants, you headed towards Akutagawa's office.
As usual, you entered without knocking. The mannerism of knocking before entering never got through your thick skull despite Chuuya's constant nagging about how you should have the decency to announce yourself before entering a room with someone in it. Especially if that person was your superior. You never listened to him though.
