KIANA LEDE BROWN
Charlotte, NC.

My baby graduated! Stephen finally got his degree in Sociology and I'm so proud of him. I remember being on FaceTime with him as he completed his many assignments while I was finishing the songs for my new album. We're productive like that.

Music has been the main reason why I've been away from him for so long. Although I love being in Stephen's presence, I also know that we both need space from each other sometimes. There's a healthy balance when it comes to separating our work lives with our love life and I love that for us.

I've never had to worry about cheating with Steph because he's always been honest with me. I trust him but a part of me will never be okay with the relationship he has with Alani. There's so much history there and the fact that she's single again is just not sitting right. They've been hanging out more than usual. I can't help but be a bit skeptical. But I'll give them both the benefit of the doubt.

My eyes followed Stephen around the room as he happily interacted with everyone who came out to support him. The genuine happiness on his face makes me smile. I almost roll my eyes as I watch Alani grab his hand and drag him to a corner away from the other guests. They talk for a second before she pulls him in for a hug. They remain like that for what feels like an eternity before they pull away. Alani's eyes kind of sparkle as she looks up at Stephen. She places a hand on his cheek and he... he leans into her touch slightly.

Umm?

"Beautiful sight, isn't it?" A man says beside me. I look up at Coach Bob McKillop

"Sure is." I reply awkwardly, unsure of what to say.

"You know, I always knew those two would end up together at some point." He shakes his head as he looks in their direction. "During Steph's freshmen year, he was really struggling with turnovers so I called him in for a meeting and Alani was with him. Before I walked into my office, I overheard her giving him this motivation speech and by the end, Stephen  said he'll propose to her right in those Davidson hallways. I hope he's still planning on doing so. A love like that only comes around once in your lifetime." I frowned slightly as Coach spoke so highly of their relationship. Also, does this guy not own a phone? He must know I'm Steph's girlfriend. He's old so I'll give him a pass.

"I'm gonna go get a drink." I excuse myself and go ask for a glass of 1942 at the bar. I down the contents of the glass and ask for a refill. The bartender notices my mood and decides not to question me, which I appreciated.

"Why the long face?" Sonya approaches me and eyes the glass in my hand. Before I could think of a lie, she looks over at Steph just as Alani finally leaves his side. "Oh, I see."

"No, no. I'm not worried about tha-"

"You don't have to pretend with me, sweetheart. I know that look all too well. I've seen it with Ayesha plenty of times and trust me, I've had the same look on my face before." She cuts me off.

Stephen filled me in on all the horrible things Sonya did to separate him and Alani all those years ago. She even cut him off at some point in 2019, but they reconciled after Raelyn was born. Since then, Sonya and Alani have been cordial to keep the peace. Still, they say a mother always knows best. Maybe there's a reason why she didn't want them together. A reason they won't accept.

"You don't have to worry about her, Kiana. Not anymore. Alani has had every chance to try and get my son back over the past 2 years and she hasn't made a move. Stephen has changed as well. He's not the same man who worships the ground she walks on. He's different with you, so don't doubt the love you two share." Sonya finishes explaining. I still felt a bit curious though.
