I took the chain off the classroom door and set my stuff down.
"Ma'am, we got new student desks but if you'd like we could replace yours" the janitor asked me.
I peaked under the desk a little and made my decision.
"No thank you, this one will do" I smiled.
And off the janitor went.
When no one was looking I crouched down and slid under the desk.
"H + Y"
Clear as day.
Still vivid even after so many years.
I had always wondered what Yeonjun had written "for the history books".
All this time he was discreetly showing his love for me.
After a while the bell rang.
"Hi class, I'm Mrs. Ahn" I introduced myself.
"I don't plan on being annoyingly strict so if you have any questions for me go ahead and ask them." I smiled.
A girl's hand shot up in the back of the class.
"Are you new to teaching?" She asked
"No I've been teaching for 20 years, but I was a journalist before" I responded.
"C'mon hit me with something harder to answer" I made the class less awkward.
A boy shot his hand up, "Do you have any kids?"
"Yes, a boy and a girl" I giggled a little.
"Does your husband also teach?" A girl asked.
I tried to keep my composure, even though that type of question still stung to hear.
"No, he wasn't" I responded as lightheartedly as possible.
I sense the confusion going around the room.
"I'm a widow. He passed away 5 months ago" The classroom got quiet.
But I didn't want my first day on the job to be sad.
"He was really handsome though, do you wanna see us when we were younger?" I stood up and walked up to the projector.
Everyone got closer and curiously asked more questions.
Although it was hard going through our pictures as just memories knowing they were nothing but that, I knew deep down that he was proud.
Yeonjun was proud of how far we'd come.
Even if that meant teaching at our old high school, without him by my side.
