The next morning I laid in Vance's bed, tired and just feeling so exhausted. The game, fighting Luke, losing my closest friends...it all really took me out. Vance was of course keeping my spirits up. Currently he was sleeping on the floor, after falling off some time last night.
"Mmhmm...sure," Vance murmured in his sleep as he shifted around on the wooden floor. I smiled as periodically he'd say something in his sleep, usually some sorts of agreement or an argument to something. Just a few minutes later he muttered a small, "I love you," and mentally I couldn't help but wish it was for me.
Maybe that was weird though. To be wishing my best friend was saying he loved me in his dream. As I started to really think about it, I cringed.
"Mmm," I heard Vance groan and the sound of him sit up. "Bruce?" I glanced over and saw him tiredly looking around before stopping at me. "Morning," he hummed, rubbing his eyes roughly.
"Morning," I smiled at him. Vance stood up, giving himself a second to wake up more, before he tiredly dragged his feet to his bed. He laid down right next to me, burying his face into the pillow. "Still tired?" I asked, him nodding his head quickly after.
Vance reached out his arm, lying it across my chest and pulling himself closer to me. I felt my face grow warm as I just stared at his face. His blue eyes pierced into mine. But then he closed them. "Are you gonna go to school?" He asked me. I shook my head once I realised school had already started. "Wow..skipping school with me," he quietly laughed, a smile lining his lips.
I laughed as well, closing my eyes again. I could probably use more sleep too. Soon I did actually fall asleep and Vance did too. But when I woke up i could hear yelling from nearby. Both the voices were familiar, but my mind wasn't fully processing it. It was Vance and Robin. My eyes widened and I sat up quickly. "What the hell?" I muttered as I quickly left the room.
"Why won't you believe me?!" I heard Robin shout.
"Why won't you believe him?! You don't actually think he'd shit talk you guys, right?" Vance followed.
I peaked my head around the corner to see Robin and Finney standing right in the doorway and Vance trying to keep them out of his home. Vance, obviously, didn't notice me since he had his back turned, nor did Robin notice me due to angrily staring at Vance. Though, Finney's dark brown eyes met with mine.
"He's popular! Everyone knows him, a ton of people like him and talk to him!" Robin argued, huffing quickly after. "How do you even know that he didn't shit talk all of us, huh?!"
"Cause I was at that damn party!" Vance growled, shoving Robin and Finney out the door and slamming it. Instead of swinging his fists and yelling more Vance just let out a deep sigh and turned around. The angry expression on his face faded into a guilty look when we made eye contact. That worried me. "Sorry if I woke you up," he mumbled out as he approached me.
I shook my head, "no, no, it's okay. Why was Robin and Finney here?"
Vance hesitated for a moment, pursing his lips and glancing away from me for a moment. "Well, at first they were asking if I knew where you were since you weren't at school today and I lied saying I didn't know," he started off, looking at me momentarily, "but then we started arguing on if you really shit talked the group or not. I defended you, but I still don't know who the heard that shit from."
It took a moment for my brain to process all of that. Then I just hugged Vance, burying my face into his neck. "Thanks for defending me," I mumbled. And, in a way I was glad Vance had also lied about my whereabouts, even though I'm pretty sure Finney knows I'm here.
As I held onto Vance I really took in the embrace. Vance smelt nice, some floral perfume scent emanating from him, and his body was warm.
Click! Creeekk...the door opened and before me or Vance could react Vance's mother walked in. "Vance why is Robin outside..saying..oh," his mother had a surprised, but welcoming expression on her face as she noticed us. "My apologies, kiddo," she smiled sweetly.
A sweet laugh slipped through her pink lips at the sight of me and Vance quickly escaping from the hug. "Ma," Vance put on a nervous smile, "I thought you were at work?"
Her smile faded as a look of disappointment formed on her face. "The neighbor called about hearing you yellin'," she said. "I assume you and Robin got into another fight. But you can talk to me about it later."
Vance nodded his head awkwardly, grabbing my hand and taking me back to his room. I closed the door softly with my foot, but Vance still never let go of my hand. He pulled me back into a hug, just like how it was before his mom had come into the home. It was silent in the room, the faint sound of the kitchen sink running in the background, my heart beating fast, and our quiet breathing.
Vance backed slightly out of the hug where we facing each other. He looked all around my face, while I just gazed into his ocean blue eyes. What was he planning? He leaned close, his eyes shutting and I was sort of excitedly preparing for a kiss...on the forehead.
