"Ishuuu, are you ready yet?!" Aliya's voice cut through the silence, as loud and piercing as an alarm clock. "We're getting late! When did you even sleep last night, huh? You're moving like a snail!"

I heard her footsteps thudding down the hallway, getting closer by the second. The panic in her voice was real, and honestly, knowing Aliya, I was in trouble.

I was trying—really trying—to focus on putting on my earrings, but my mind kept drifting back to the conversation with my dad and bhaiya. Their words kept looping in my head, making me space out. As I absentmindedly fiddled with the jewelry, I felt a hand grip my shoulder and shake me, snapping me back to reality.

"Ikshita!" Aliya gasped, her eyes wide as if I had committed some kind of fashion crime.

"What? What happened?" I looked at her, confused. Was I doing something wrong? Was my outfit inside out? Had I missed a step?

"Were you seriously about to wear an anklet in your ear?" She gawked at me like I'd just tried to put on a shoe as a hat.

Wait... what? I looked down at my hand—and yup, sure enough, I was holding an anklet. Trying to shove it into my left ear. Classic me.

"Oh. Oops," I mumbled, blinking at the shiny piece of jewelry. "I... guess I wasn't paying attention?"

Aliya facepalmed so hard I thought she might leave a mark. "Ishuu, I swear, if your head wasn't attached to your body, you'd leave it behind. What's going on with you today?" She sighed dramatically. "Come on, let me help you. We're running late, and your mom's probably about to lose her patience. Again."

Mom. Right. That's what had me all rattled in the first place.

"Thanks, Aaloo Bomb," I muttered as she snatched the anklet away and handed me the actual earring. She always knew when to step in and save me from myself.
