I WOKE UP TO THE SOUND OF a shout.
Lucy had woken up with a fright, shouting "Aslan". Gael hadn't woken up, but I did.
I looked up from my spot at the round table, having fallen asleep on a blanket I'd been hugging but been too caught up in the loud thunder and rocking of the ship to sleep. I guess I did end up falling asleep, but I don't remember when.
I sat up and looked over as Lucy climbed out of bed with a balled up piece of paper in her hands. She walked over with the intentions of throwing it in the fireplace, but I stood up and stopped her.
"What is that?" I asked.
She hesitated. "It's nothing... nothing important." She went to throw it into the fire again but I insisted.
"You wouldn't be frantically trying to burn it if it wasn't important. You are worrying me, Lucy. Tell me, please."
She sighed and sat down in front of the fireplace, and I sat in front of her. She handed me the paper and shamefully looked into the fire. I furrowed my eyebrows at the look on her face before looking down at the paper and pulling it gently so it didn't rip. I flattened it out on the wood floor and read the words. It was an incantation.
On the paper were words of an incantation to change someone's appearance into someone else's, and the picture of a woman in a mirror. Did Lucy want to look like someone else? If so, whom?
"Lucy..."
"I know," she interrupted, sighing deeply. "I shouldn't have taken it. It was a mistake, I-"
"Who was this for?"
She remained silent, looking back at the fireplace.
"Lucy," I reiterated, more firmly. "Who is this for?"
She looked down at her hands in her lap. "Susan..." she muttered, almost inaudibly.
It took me a moment to realize what she meant, and when I did, I let out a long breath. All I felt for her was sorrow. "You envy Susan, don't you?" I inquired, gauging her reaction. "You have, since before we got here."
The girl sighed, nodding.
My face dropped, and I leaned toward her. "Lucy, you have nothing to be envious over," I said softly, grasping the younger girl's hands tightly.
"Susan's so much prettier than me," Lucy muttered, looking away.
"Hey," I said, making Lucy look back at me. I sent the poor girl a warm smile. "One day, you're gonna find someone, and he will love you for who you are. He'll find you to be the most beautiful woman he's ever seen and he'll never let you go." I paused, thinking for a moment. "Nobody's perfect. We all make mistakes, and the one you'll be with is bound to make mistakes as well, same with you and me. It makes us human. Heck, even the most 'perfect' men out there will make mistakes. Many of them. But, do you know who doesn't make mistakes?" I grasped my beloved cross that hung from my neck.
Lucy smiled as I continued.
"God. He makes no mistakes. He will put people in your path to help you grow. And eventually, He'll put someone in your life that will stay with you and love you unconditionally for ever. Even beyond this life, you will remain together for the rest of eternity."
