I SAW IT FROM BELOW. THE SERPENT was circling the Dawn Treader. It was cracking. The ship was going to be crushed.
It was getting darker the more I sank, unable to gather the strength to continue fighting the weight that seemed to be pushing me further away from the surface. Something also seemed to be pulling be down my the chain of my necklace, further constricting my neck. It hurt. It tugged so hard at one point it felt like it snapped.
But what could I do? I was goodness only knows how far from the surface, almost unconscious, and in immense pain. I could do nothing.
I had already tried profusely to fight my way to the surface, but it was no use. I kept getting further and further away, the more I tried. The more I tried, the more tired I got, and the less hope I had.
I was gonna drown.
Caspian screamed my name as he saw me fall. He swore under his breath before telling Drinian to keep fighting the creature before he took his heavy leather and metal armor off and wasted no time in leaping from the banister and diving into the water.
The lack of light because of the fog made it difficult to see, but he spotted a small silhouette deeper in the water and forced himself to swim faster.
Barely able to make out the features of my face when he reached me, he grabbed me around my waist with one arm and kicked and paddled up with his other as fast as he could.
There seemed to be some resistance in the water; definitely not the type one would feel in regular seawater.
It took some fighting, but Caspian was able to alleviate the burning in his lungs once he reached the surface and gasped a load of air in. He made his way to the nearest rock with a small flat area just a couple inches above the surface and hoisted me onto it. He climbed up, breathing heavily and cold as he glanced at the Dawn Treader.
Drinian steered it to where it rammed the serpent between the wood dragon's head and a large black rock jutting from the water.
Having seen enough for now, Caspian pulled the satchel from around my torso and placed it on the rock to the side, undid the clasps of the leather vest I was wearing to hold a few small weapons, and removing it and tossing it next to the satchel. He placed his ear on my chest, but there was nothing. Panicked, he placed his hands on my chest and began pushing down, doing this a few times before he opened my mouth, pinching my nose shut, and exhaling into my mouth. He leaned up again and began doing more compressions, before repeating the process for what felt like long, grueling hours with dread growing and seeping from every inch of him.
The longer he tried with no success, the less hope he had of me coming back.
"No, no, no..." he muttered before breathing into my mouth again. He did more compressions, but it felt like the last of his strength seemed to leave him as he leaned forward and let his forehead fall to rest just under my chest.
He heaved long breaths that slowly turned into sobs, before lurching up and trying again. It had to work at some point.
He pushed and pushed and exhaled and exhaled, for what felt like another several minutes, but still... nothing.
Suddenly, light flashes, and Caspian slowly turned to see lightning striking the serpent with a glowing blue sword that had been stabbed into the roof of its mouth as it tried to kill Edmund, who was in the crows nest. It then fell into the water, vanquished.
