Chapter 6: What You Can Be, All You Shouldn't Be

As Ryujin gradually emerged from the depths of unconsciousness, the world around him slowly came into focus, like a painting being unveiled one brushstroke at a time. Blinking against the harsh glare of the overhead lights, he winced and shielded his eyes, the brightness piercing through his skull like a thousand needles. Groaning softly, he shifted, the mattress beneath him unfamiliar and unyielding compared to the soft embrace of his own bed.

With a heavy sigh, he rolled onto his side, the pillow muffling the incessant beeping that echoed in the room, its rhythm intrusive and unwelcome. As his senses gradually returned, he realized he was lying in a plain, white bed, the sterile surroundings offering no clue as to his whereabouts or how he had ended up here.

Rubbing his eyes, Ryujin tentatively opened them, relief washing over him as he found his body unharmed, the events of the previous night feeling like a distant memory. Yet, the nagging sense of unease lingered, gnawing at the edges of his consciousness as he tried to piece together the fragments of his fractured memory.

Suddenly, the familiar whirring of machinery caught his attention, snapping him out of his reverie. Before he could investigate further, a small, sleek figure with familiar, neon blue lights had leapt onto his chest, startling him momentarily before recognition dawned.

"Catt! You're here too," he exclaimed, relief flooding through him as he gathered the robotic feline into his arms, her purring a comforting melody against his chest. "Do you know where we are?" he asked, his voice a mixture of curiosity and confusion as he glanced around the unfamiliar room.

As he stroked Catt's smooth, metallic form, he couldn't help but frown at the incessant beeping emanating from the machine nearby. "And what's with that noise? Any idea how to shut it off?" he muttered, irritation creeping into his tone as he shot a glare at the offending device, as if the inanimate machine gave a shit about what he thought.

"Seems like you're finally awake, Anomaly." The room seemed to shrink as the familiar, unwelcoming voice pierced the air, shattering the fragile peace that had momentarily settled. Ryujin's heart leaped into his throat as he looked up, locking eyes once again with the man who had nearly ended his life, the sniper rifle still a menacing presence on his back. His clothes, a familiar uniform alongside a dark black coat now finally discernible.

The young man stood with an air of authority, his posture rigid and unwavering, a stark contrast to Ryujin's defensive stance. The memory of their previous encounter loomed large in Ryujin's mind, his muscles tensing as he prepared for the worst.

"You again?" Ryujin spat, his words laced with aggression and suspicion. "What are you doing here? And cut the crap with all that 'anomaly' bullshit-"

His expression remained stoic, his annoyance thinly veiled as his patience wore thin. "Watch your language," he chided, his voice raised and tinged with exasperation. "You should count yourself fortunate I've been given orders to stand down." With a resigned sigh, he continued, "My apologies for the misunderstanding. My name is Yamikumo, Agent of the ACU's Second Unit."

Ryujin's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, his mind struggling to process the man's words. "Uh, okay," he muttered, his suspicion still lingering despite the introduction. "I'm Ryujin, and this is Catt." He gestured towards the robotic feline nestled in his arms, her presence a small source of comfort amidst the tension.

While Catt seemed unperturbed by Yamikumo's presence, Ryujin couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at him. Memories of their previous altercation flashed through his mind, a reminder of Yamikumo's formidable skill and his own vulnerability in the face of it.

Yamikumo's patience wore thin as he attempted to convey the situation to Ryujin, whose obliviousness seemed to know no bounds.

"Oh, don't worry, the Captain has already acquainted me with the two of you. Seems like you three are close, hm? Typical of him..."
