The path east of Astrapi was a graveyard of devastation. Buildings leaned precariously or had crumbled altogether, reduced to jagged ruins. The air hung thick with a sickly, metallic scent, merging the stench of charred debris with something far worse: a nauseating cocktail of iron and bile. Blood and entrails painted the streets, telling fragmented, horrific tales of the anomaly's rampage.
The bodies they passed ranged from barely recognizable to grotesquely disfigured. Some were crushed under slabs of concrete, their twisted limbs jutting at unnatural angles, bone splintering grotesquely through the skin. Others bore deep lacerations and punctures, as if some monstrous creature had torn into them in a frenzied assault. Pieces of organs lay strewn across the pavement, many reduced to mangled, bloody shreds. The destruction felt too vast, too brutal-as if no single being could have caused such havoc.
A strange residue coated some of the walls, a thick, viscous acid that pulsed an unsettling pinkish-purple hue, sizzling as it ate into concrete and metal alike. The unit moved forward cautiously, each of them well aware of the hellish power they pursued, the memories of their last battle etched vividly in their minds.
"Jeez... This thing still can't pick a favorite way to kill people?" Usagi muttered, her eyes darting over the wreckage as she gripped her anchor, its chain coiled around her arm. Her usual playful tone was subdued, her brows furrowed. "Not exactly the scenic route here..."
"Doesn't matter; we're here to give it a proper beatdown," Antonio grinned with a bastardly confidence, his knuckles cracking as he rolled his shoulders, the thrill of battle sparking in his eyes. His unruly curls framed his face, freckled and half-hidden by the stray wisps of hair that peeked out from his carelessly worn uniform, a trait he and his good friend Usagi had trademarked. The silver chain around his neck glinted faintly, and his mechanical bracelets clicked as he stretched. "Just need to give it a good left and right and it's goodnight!"
"Antonio, let's not forget the last time you tried that," his brother, JJ, reminded him with a cautious glance, adjusting his square-rimmed glasses. He looked nearly identical to Antonio, though a bit slimmer, and his demeanor was decidedly more restrained. The chain he wore was hidden under his shirt, a subtle contrast to Antonio's brash display. "Our weapons barely scratched it. That thing's skin even managed to mess up Asuna's arm."
"I see we're pulling my failures into the chat now, huh?" Asuna smirked, giving JJ a playful side-eye. Despite her taller, more imposing figure, her dark green hair cropped close to her head and her round-rimmed glasses lent a softer touch to her otherwise stern appearance. A scattering of stitches trailed across her skin, adding a rugged charm that matched her serious, grounded presence. "Don't go dragging my record just to feel taller, JJ."
"Ah! T-That wasn't my intention, Vice-Captain... I'm so-"
She interrupted his flustered apology with a quiet chuckle, lightly patting his shoulder. "Kidding, kiddo. You should know me better by now." Her voice softened, her eyes momentarily distant. "Besides, we did land a few solid hits last time. This thing can bleed; it's just tough as hell."
"Exactly," Antonio said, punching his brother's arm playfully. "No need to worry, JJ. We've taken on nastier monsters before. Besides, we're still breathing, aren't we?"
JJ tried to muster a grin, but his hand tightened around the gear tucked beneath his shirt, a talisman against the dread that crept in. "Yeah, we're alive... but that thing killed about a third of our team last time." His voice held a tremor of anxiety, a crack in his normally calm facade.
Hearing JJ's words, Max's face grew solemn. The reminder weighed on him, yet he said nothing, his usual stoic demeanor barely concealing the flicker of unease as he led the group, his gaze scanning the desolate landscape ahead.
