The interview portion came, and I wasn't surprised anymore. Maybe because I had already expected the unexpected. I was the second one called in that morning.

There were no numbers, no strict order---just a  matter of who was ready. So I raised my hand right away. Why wait for later when I could face it now?

When it was finally my turn, I didn't feel too nervous. My mind was clear, my heart steady.

"In one minute, tell me about yourself," the interviewer said.

I answered easily, and before I knew it, I was facing the next panelist. "What talent do you have that you can contribute to our school? As much as possible, answer in English."

My mind went blank. Talent? I didn't know what mine was. But I knew what I wanted---to be like the people I admired, the ones who had carved their path to success. I wanted to be one of them.

So I answered, "I don't know my talent yet, for I am still finding it. But what I am sure of is that I'll bring victory to this school. I will be forever grateful to be part of this, as this has been my dream school since I was young. I may not have the talent, but I have the potential."

A few days later, I met a classmate who had taken the same course---Engineering. She had a different interview schedule that's why we hadn't crossed paths. She shared her interview experience, saying she had "sold herself" to the panel and ended with complete confidence that she'd be accepted.

Her words made me doubt myself. I felt small in comparison.

When the results came, I was overjoyed—I had passed. She hadn't. And in that moment, my excitement was mixed with something else: a deep, aching sympathy for her.
