-In the bleak midwinter, as a raging storm hit Windhaven Camp with all its strength, the miracle of life found its way to a small cracking house, where a small fragile girl was welcomed to the world.
There was no doubt about her belonging to the Illyrian camps, it was the first thought her mother, Maliah, had when she first held her, with the rich brown hair, the golden brown shade of her skin, the endless constellations of freckles spattered 'cross her delicate cheekbones.
Another bastard born for Illyria to break, another female for them to shatter, another soul for them to imprison. But this time, with star-flecked violet eyes, her father's eyes, the High Lord's eyes.
It broke Mal down to dust, knowing that her daughter will one day end up just like her, unloved, unwanted, just another so-called disgrace to the family's blood and purity, another lamb for them to sacrifice, another prey for the arrows of their judgements and restrictions.
She was so beautiful, her little Elayla, so precious, so tiny and breakable, with her small clenched fists and oblivious closed eyes that couldn't see the cruelty of her fate yet. Unfortunately, that pure smile would only get wiped with time, from the cruelty and wickedness of the world.
The first year of Layla's life was the easiest, Maliah tried not to live what other single mothers in Illyria lived through, and didn't want the small child to live what multiple others had lived through, but still, it wasn't enough. Nothing was never enough, not when Elayla's fate was already sealed.
A curse... A gift... A prophecy...

Disclaimer :
The original ACOTAR series, the story setting, its characters and events all belong to Sarah J. Maas.
I, however do own Elayla, Maliah, as well as every other original character, their backstory and most of their dialogues.
This is part one of the Vows series, who will most likely follow the entirety of the SJM universe.
