Nora's POV:-
For a while I just watch Derek's face silently, not knowing what to say.
"Your grandmother is waiting for you. " I turn around to see my grandmother glaring at me as she stands near the gate of our house.
I hear the rev of an engine and turn around to see Derek's car speeding off into the distance.
" What were you thinking letting Derek drop you home like that?" My grandmother starts ripping into me the moment I step inside the living room.
Even though I still haven't told her about watching Derek kidnap a man and him blackmailing me to keep my mouth shut my grandmother still hates and fears him. I wonder what would happen if I told her everything. It somehow makes me feel more foolish that I let myself be alone with Derek in his car.
"He insisted on dropping me back home and it had gotten late," I say trying to keep my voice even.
"It would have been better if you walked home alone in the middle of the night instead of taking his help." Grandma rubs her temples something she does when she's stressed.
" I have a feeling you know more about his family than you are letting on," I say quietly.
"In the past, there were only a handful of old money families that existed in this city. Back then, we used to interact all the time at dinner parties and balls. That's how I came to know the Osbornes. The Osborne family was always respected, but even then, it was said that madness was in their blood." Grandma settles on one of the chairs looking as if all the energy had drained out of her.
"All of them were known to be hot-tempered, passionate, and narcissistic, but in every generation, there was always one who was born without any shred of empathy. A complete psychopath. Derek's grandfather was one, and Derek seems to be his spitting image. I am sure the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." She says, looking grim.
" You still aren't telling me everything. " I say frustrated.
"I don't want to revisit my past, Nora." Grandma cradles her head in her hands.
" You have got to tell me more." I prod her.
"His grandfather wanted to marry me. I didn't want to get engaged, but he forced me into it. He did terrible things to keep me around him. Things that I don't want to discuss." Her eyes lose focus, and she starts to slip off her chair.
" Grandma!" I manage to grab hold of her before she tumbles to the floor.
" Are you alright? What happened?" I help her settle back on the chair.
" This happened because of you! I told you not to make me recall the past!" Her voice is shaky, and she looks like she aged ten years in a matter of minutes.
"Alright, Grandma, I will stay away from Derek, and I won't ask you any more questions," I say this reluctantly as now I am more curious than ever about what happened in the past, between her and Derek's grandfather.
" So you are saying that our Grandma was engaged to Derek's grandfather? That's crazy!" Nigella is sitting on my bed as I tap away on my old desktop computer. It was one of the last things my dad ever bought me. It was wise of him because, in our current situation, we wouldn't have been able to afford it.
"Yup. I have a feeling that his grandfather did something to her. Something terrible. " I shudder when I think about the expression on my grandmother's face.
" Do you think Grandma has some sort of PTSD because of what happened?" Nigella inches closer to me.
" Maybe." I am busy scrolling through articles about Derek's grandfather.
