Chapter 27

Benjamin

"I feel like it'd be better to wait until you actually have your schedule," I suggested. Charlotte and I sat in our usual booth at Maggie's, laptops opened as we sipped our coffees. We only had two weeks until we moved into our dorm rooms. And were two hours apart.

"Do you know how to read?" Charlotte rolled her eyes and slouched back against the worn booth. "It says 'tentative' in bold, all caps at the top." She had shared a Google Excel sheet with me after she had meticulously created a semester calendar.

"I'm sorry, I don't actually know what 'tentative' means," I teased with a grin.

"Shut up, Benny-boy," she grumbled in annoyance.

"Hey," I said, my voice more serious. She looked at me, her eyebrows furrowed as her brown eyes softened. "I love you. And nothing's gonna come between us, okay? Not even those stupid two hours."

She sighed softly. "I know, Ben. I love you, too, but this is college. The stakes are higher. I can't have you showing up at my door every weekend. I love you. I love you so fucking much, but you're so distracting. And I know it's just 'cause you want to spend time with me. But I need this plan so I can actually spend time with you. I need my Ben weekends, and I'll need my study weekends."

Reaching across the table, I gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Okay, Char," I said. "I understand. As long as I still get my weekends with you, that's all that matters."

"Also, I don't register until two days before classes start, which is the fucking worst," Charlotte groaned, dragging a hand through her red curls in frustration. "But I have an idea of what I'll be taking. When do you get your schedule?"

"Oh, I have it. I thought I sent it to you?" I said. Charlotte perked up at this. "I can send it again."

"Yes, please."

We stayed at Maggie's, hashing out visit plans over refilled mugs of coffee. Finally we settled on Charlotte driving to see me once a month, with me making the trip to her once a month as well. As we marked the months on her calendar app, the plan started to feel more solid.

"We'll figure out exactly which weekends once I have my schedule," Charlotte noted, tapping out of the app with a small smile.

As we packed up and made our way to the car, I felt my phone vibrating non-stop in my pocket. Fishing it out, my eyes widened at the barrage of notifications flooding the screen.
