After adding the last touches to my make-up, I decided that I wasn't going to get any prettier, and took my phone, ready to go downstairs and face Christmas Eve with Pedri and his family. The talk with his father had liberated me on the one hand, but I was still hesitant on the other. I had messed up big time and now I didn't even know if he had told his wife and how the whole mood at the table would pan out. And my poor daughters in the middle of this whole mess, what had they done to deserve a messy mother like me?

Everyone was already downstairs, except for Fer, with the parents bustling around in the kitchen and Pedri entertaining Sofi and Blanca. The image warmed my heart, he looked so happy playing the victim to my daughters' playful attacks, but as soon as he caught me watching, his smile faded. Great, this wasn't going in the right direction at all.
"Mami! Look good!" Blanca squealed and I smiled as I picked her up in the air.
"Not as pretty as you. You know that you have Papi's beautiful eyes..." I told her, as I got lost in that sea of blue while a tear rolled down my cheek. Why did Rodri have to die? Life was so unfair.

"Finally! There you are! Let's start eating!" Rosy shouted as Fer finally emerged from his room, wearing a horrendous pair of black, ripped, skinny jeans and a black dress shirt - I just looked at him with a disgusted look. Fashion sense was definitely not flowing through the brothers' veins.
"What?" he asked, when he noticed my face.
"Nothing" I quickly replied but he still looked at me with an annoyed face.
"Oi, sorry that I'm not the one getting fashion advice in Prada!" he chuckled and I recalled the memory from the time I ran into him and Pedri at that store, so many months ago.
"As decisive she is on fashion, as indecisive she is in life" Pedri commented as he stood up and walked to the dining table.

He swapped some seats, and told my daughters to sit at each one of his sides, while Fer sat down across from him. I knew which ones were always the seats of Rosy and Fernando and so that left me all alone on the other side of the table. Wow, what strong signals he was sending tonight. To say that dinner was awkward, was an understatement. While the side of the table with the girls, Pedri, Fer and Rosy was joking around and having fun, I was just poking my fork into the food, forcing myself to chug it down to not let Rosy be offended as she had put so much effort into cooking it. Fernando was eyeing me with a look, mixed with pity and worry.

I couldn't wait for the moment that everyone had finished dessert to grab Sofi and Blanca and hurry upstairs to tuck them into bed. It took me longer than usual, because of them being in complete overdrive from the day and the sugar they had just eaten, but after half an hour, I closed the door behind them and took a deep sigh before walking to the door across, that led to the bathroom. I closed it behind me and sat down next to the toilet to finally let the tears fall down. I pushed two fingers down my throat and puked all of what I had eaten today down into the toilet bowl. It somehow liberated me and I knew this wasn't healthy, but I couldn't stop pushing my fingers down my throat again and again, until all of my stomach's content was flushed down the drain. I felt awful and just cried, only wanting to fall asleep here and now, but I couldn't. So I gathered up all my strength and washed my face a couple of times before deeming myself presentable enough if someone ran into me on the short distance back to my room.

And indeed, when I opened the door, Pedri was leaned against its doorframe. He quickly stood up straight and cleared his throat.
"You're not pregnant, are you?" he asked in the most monotone voice I had ever heard him produce. This just brought out new tears.
"No, you idiot" I choked out in between sobs before pushing past him and locking myself into my room, in case he wanted to come after me.

But who was I kidding, as when I opened my ghost TikTok the next morning, I found a dozen videos of him partying in a club on the island on my FYP. Angrily, I threw my phone into my suitcase, making sure it wouldn't hit something hard and break because where the fuck would I buy a new phone at Christmas? I dragged out Sofia and Blanca to Loro Parque for the day in order not to run into him when he'd return in his dreadful state. Dinner was awkward enough when we returned, with his parents scolding him and him looking more dead than alive.

"Isa! Say something! At Christmas out of all days! This puts you in such bad light! You're injured!" his mum exclaimed disappointedly.
"I'm just straightening it out afterwards. He can do whatever he want" I replied uninterested.
"Mama, what has Pedri done that you are all so angry?" Sofi asked and I looked over to the protagonist of the conversation, raising my eyebrow.
"Pedri went to a special place where there are special drinks with which you can forget your sadness" he told them, but I was left very unimpressed by his clean explication of events.

"Some people think they need those special drinks. But in the end, they only leave you emptier than you already are." I added.
"Like drugs?" Sofi asked and all of us adults turned to her with shocked faces.
"How do you know about drugs?" Fer blurted out the question that was going through all our minds.
"Uncle Ferran once told me about them. That I should never take them. And never trust any strange men mum would bring home someday. We can only trust Pedri, Uncle Fer and him. They're the best men on earth. That's what he said." Sofi explained and I was left a bit weirded out, but somehow touched at how much time and effort Ferran put in with my daughters. And into always managing to tease me and Pedri in some weird ways.

"Uncle Ferran is an idiot" Pedri growled from across the table.
"Pedri!" Fer and I exclaimed in unison.
"Whatever. I'm going out again, meeting with Adri and the rest. In case you want to come, Fer." Pedri announced as he stood up. "You're not invited" he added, pointing at me. That's when I lost it.
"Oh! You made it very clear from the first day that I wasn't welcome here even though it wasn't even you to extend the invite!" I shouted, throwing my handkerchief onto the table.
"In the end, this is MY house, bought with MY money!" he shouted back in his rage.
"DON'T YOU DARE DISRESPECT YOUR PARENTS THIS WAY!" I shrieked. I was seeing so red.
"SAYS THE ONE SHAGGING THEIR SON BEHIND THEIR BACKS!" he replied and everyone's jaws dropped.

Poor Rosy, she looked like she had seen not one ghost, but a whole army. Fernando just put his head in his hands, Fer looked at his brother incredulously and my daughters. Oh shit. In my anger, I walked over to Pedri and gave him a hard slap across his whole face.
"IN FRONT OF MY DAUGHTERS, YOU IDIOT!" I sobbed in between tears that were streaming down my face now. The worst thing about everything was that I couldn't even run up to my room to cry and hide, no, I had to take care of two traumatised kids now. I extended my hand that Sofia took wordlessly, while picking up Blanca and carrying her upstairs on my hip.

When we were in my room, I sat them down onto the bed and took a deep breath.
"Mama, what happened?" Sofi asked with a trembling voice.
"Mama messed up. Mama is so sorry. We will fly back home tomorrow. Don't worry, my darlings" I whispered and hugged them tightly.
"Apologise to Pedri?" Blanca asked in her not yet perfect grammar.
"I will. But not now. Mama is very upset and sad." I sighed. "Let's go brush our teeth, shall we?" I asked and they both nodded. Until they were in bed, I noticed them being distant, a result of the scene they had just witnessed. Fuck, I was the worst mother.

As soon as the light was out in their room, I booked the first morning flight back home to Barcelona. Now I just had to go downstairs and confront Rosy - my knees were shaking, my whole body was trembling. I found her in the kitchen, cleaning up everything and I stopped in the doorframe, looking at the ground ashamed.
"I should have caught on earlier..." she sighed.
"I messed up, I'm so sorry" I whispered.
"Maybe, but he did too" she replied and I raised my eyebrows in surprise.

"I guess you came down to tell me you're leaving tomorrow?" she asked.
"Yeah... and to apologise. You've been nothing but friendly to me and I... betrayed you" I mumbled.
"Oh, don't be so dramatic. Pedri's an adult, of course it was kind of shocking to learn all... that at the Christmas table, but my husband has already given me a breakdown. I'm a sucker for gossip" she chuckled.
"Oh, well, you'll be in for a long story then" I sighed.

"At least you won't have to witness the scene I'll give him tomorrow. I don't even want to know what he's out doing, what will land on the internet, the papers..." she sighed.
"No matter what it is, I'll make sure it is erased and taken down. Like I always do." I replied and pressed my lips into a small smile.
