10: Cat got your tongue?

  Standing there like a deer in headlights, I contemplate my choices. I can run trying to somehow get past a titanium brick wall, I can throw myself out the window ending my life in seconds, or I just embrace whatever happens next. I guess that last one is my best bet. Running makes me look bad, and I'm not killing myself over being caught looking at a damn email.

But, with what I read in that email. would I be better off? Scarlett has been nice so far, but why would she need to "buy" and "protect" me? Janice keeps her smirk up and starts walking up to me. "Cat got your tongue there (Y/N)?" She says sarcastically. I just nod, and she chuckles. "Now now, I won't tattle. Just let me take a look as well, ey?" She offers shocking me.

She finally reaches me, while being shorter than me she is very confident about any potential things I might try. Then she randomly boops my nose giggling. "God you're so serious man. Chillax." She says and then turns around looking at the monitor as well. She does a quick scan, having her smile turn upside down.

Her eyes squint as she reads more, scrolling down and see's Scarlett's 'proposition' about me. A minute passes, and she sighs deeply. She pinches her nose shutting her eyes. She shakes her head and mutters "So she's made her move. Ha." Janice turns back to me and grins again.

She reaches over and lightly grabs my shoulder. "You should head home. I think you're way past your off time anyways. Don't worry about this. You're in good hands." She lightly says. "yeah? how could I trust you after seeing this shit Scarlett is pulling despite her attempts at 'securing my safety'?" I mutter without thinking.

Her face blanks, letting go of my shoulder. Then she nods at me, "That's fair to ask. Here." She replies pulling out her phone. She opens it up, and then randomly my phone *DINGS* and I check it. It's a pdf file from a random number, and I hear her sigh. "Read that when you get home. It'll give you good clause to trust me." She then starts lightly dragging me out of the office.

We reach the door and she gently pushes me out. "Now go." Shutting the door behind me. I glance at it for a moment, then back at my phone. I sigh mentally, how the fuck did I get here? It's not even my third day and I've had all these bombs dropped on me. I just wanna work simple man. What did I do for karma to give me all of this?

I shake my head and go towards the main elevator. Contemplating everything that's happened, Scarlett did basically lie and get my signature down to consent to things I didn't know about. Hell she's kinda been off since our first interaction, why would a top hero pay attention to a janitor like me? There's gotta be more to this.

But I'm unsure if I even want to find out the reasons. She's trying to buy me from my family, like I'm some prize. Which while flattering in a way, I'd rather not repeat history and be another Kayne.

Lost in thought I don't notice a door opening, and a silver haired woman stepping out of it.

She watches me for a moment, noticing my lack of attention on my surroundings. She slowly follows me to the elevator, I hit the button to go down standing there quietly. I sigh deeply as I still don't know what to do regarding everything. Maybe my mom can help, but if she accepted then I might be fucked.

Running away could be an option, but they can fly and run quickly. I'd be found instantly and they'd bitch about the breach of that contract Scarlett gaslit me into signing. *DING* the elevator reaches my floor, the doors open and I see the reflection of someone behind me. A silver haired green eyed woman staring at me, my eyes widen quickly and I quickly head into the elevator.

I push the #0 button, then spam the close doors button as well. It's fucking Mary. I've got no one around me either. God damnit close already! The doors finally comply but her hand reaches through blocking it. They re-open and she enters the elevator as well. She doesn't say anything, just stands in the corner watching me.

I'm a nervous wreck. Here I am next to the psycho lover herself, in the exact position Kayne was. But I'm not a "gigachad" like him so, maybe she's just curious. Right? Shit I need to calm down, I'm shaking like a hooker in church. I slowly start doing deep breathings, glancing at her still seeing her soft green eyes looking at me.

She tilts her head, and softly says "Are you okay? You look nervous." I nod quickly looking back at the elevator buttons. Hoping to hear that ding soon. I hear her take a step towards me, I don't move. I glance at the metal bar behind me, that could work.

She takes another step, I slowly adjust myself keeping her in my peripheral vision. Her face is still the same, tilted and boring holes into my head. Then she reaches her hand towards me, I glance at it and she finally giggles. "I'm Mary, you must be new here right? Being in an elevator with a top hero is nerve wracking to everyone so don't worry!" She sweetly says smiling softly at me closing her eyes.

Okay, I'll admit. That's actually adorable. I slowly reach forward grabbing her hand and quickly shaking it. "I'm (Y/N), and yeah. Been running into a lot of you guys recently so it's a bit hectic." I say gaining my confidence again. She giggles again opening her eyes. She lets go of my hand placing it back by her side.

We sit in silence for a moment, and I realize something. If there was a call to action with Scarlett, why didn't Janice or Mary go with her? Something isn't adding up. I glance back at Mary and she's calmly watching the numbers go down. She notices my gaze and meets it. "What's up? Want a picture or something?" She asks and I shake my head no.

"I was just in Scarlett's office helping her with a duty, but she got called out for something important. So I'm wondering why you aren't going with her?" I ask and her face pulls back in confusion. "A call? I haven't heard anything about that. It's been quiet these past few days, but maybe she's got a lead on something." She answers while shrugging.

*DING* the elevator finally reaches the ground floor. That felt way longer than usual, but being in here with her is probably why. I nod at her and exit the elevator heading to Jake's office. I want a water bottle to calm these nerves. I check my phone again checking the time. "2:55" it reads. It's felt way longer but sure. That's cool I guess, relieves me to not worry about my mom waiting on me.

I reach his office and put my key into the doorknob, unlocking and opening it the room is vacant. Lucky me. I'm still curious about Jake though, hope he's okay. Heading to his fridge I open it taking a water bottle out, I close it, take off the jacket they want us to wear, then head out. Locking the door behind me, the hallway is empty as usual.

I walk to Phoenix's office and knock on it to inform her I'm leaving. "Come in." She says and I enter, she's at her desk alone typing stuff in. She glances at me, "Guessing you're out of here huh? Well have a good day (Y/N)." She says and I nod offering a "You too." Closing the door again. I head to the lobby of the building, nodding at Kay. Waiting for my moms arrival.

                                  Janice POV:

I shove him out of the office, closing it behind him. I sigh glancing back at Scarlett's desk and head towards it again. I select the email from J and mark it as unread so she doesn't get suspicious. I assume this is where she left off, so I won't do anything more.

That poor kid, he's just some random dude yet all of this is happening to him. God damnit Scarlett, if you could just be normal you'd probably get him anyways. But I guess that leaves more opportunity for the rest of us, he doesn't seem to care about our positions or powers. Just treats us as normal people, and that's a dime a dozen.

But if he's gonna be traumatized and gaslit into signing random things, then no one should force him into anything. But with what happened for Kayne, it would be better if he knows asap and has the tools of protection. I sigh and leave Scarlett's office. Noticing Mary's office is now open, I narrow my eyes and head to the main elevator confirming my suspicions. I doubt he took the janitor's elevator cause it's a bit farther, so this is good.

Mary can keep her eye on him, I'll need to text her first though. We can't afford another incident, this time we'll be better. Scarlett, I've got my fucking eye on you. They tried to hide it, but I know better. I narrow my eyes glaring back at Scarlett's office.
