*Abby's POV*

Melanie came running back threw the forest. Twelve wolves jumped out of the bushes right after she left. I told her to run, but one of the bigger guys grabbed her. I kicked and screamed, I told her to leave. She had tears rimming her eyes, she looked behind me. She smiled and looked back to me. I could feel her deep in my heart, but something was blocking me from seeing the past. I can't find her, I was swimming in my own memories.

"Lance loves you mommy," I stopped listening to her. I wouldn't let her words fill my ears, I can't have her tell me goodbye when I am just now getting her. The guy holding her stabbed her in the stomach, They stabbed her!! No... no. I desperately tried to get her  to hold on. She smiled at me, "Ill see you in heaven."

"NO!!!" I watched as the life drained from her eyes. I barely knew her, but deep down my heart was breaking. I screamed out desperately for them to let me go, Lance was shouting my name but all I could see was my little girl lying on ground lifeless. My heart was pounding slowly in my chest, time slowed down. I looked around and saw Nick fighting two bigger wolves, Lance was nearest to me. He was trying to get to me, he kept calling my name. Something hit me in the back of the head, my vision went in and out. I struggled to stay awake, Nick went down, then Lance went down. Nick never once looked at me, but Lance  couldn't take his eyes off me. Lance shouted my name and managed to break free of the the two men holding him.

I felt him lift my head from the ground. He whispered something into my ear, I tried to ask what he said but I couldn't find the words. As the world around me came crashing down I heard Lance.

"Abby, I have to tell you something." I nodded. "I, Lance, accept you as my mate."

He kissed my lips and everything flashed into my mind with a jolt. My baby girl Melanie, the last thing I remember of her is her smiling. Everything that happened up to when I was attacked and now here I was with my true mate. Every day Lance was there, every day he showed me what a true mate is. I flashed back to when he forced me to eat, he was always there while Nick was sleeping with other girls. Everything I did to cause Lance harm, taking blow for blow, and he never left my side. He always told me to be happy, and when I was with him, I was. His words rang threw my ears as blackness engulfed me. His voice sending me peacefully on my way.

*Lance's POV*

I held her body close to mine, I felt her body connecting to mine as I accepted her. She deserved happiness, I never would have guessed that I found my mate in the woods that day. Tears filled my eyes as I remember taking her to the pack doctor. She showed her everything, from the bruises to the outlining of her ribs. She was shaking as I held her up, she didn't want to leave my side. I fought for her survival. Many times she would toss her food in the trash when no one was looking. I remember the first time she smiled out of pure happiness, I smiled at the thought as I stroked her hair. We were shopping for some of her own clothes and we passed by a store playing Nickleback. She walked in and went to the front desk, after I walked in the music got louder and started over.

"Well, I know the feeling

Of finding yourself stuck out on the ledge
And there ain't no healing
From cutting yourself with the jagged edge
I'm telling you that, it's never that bad
Take it from someone who's been where you're at
Laid out on the floor
And you're not sure you can take this anymore

So just give it one more try to a lullaby
And turn this up on the radio
If you can hear me now
I'm reaching out
To let you know that you're not alone
And if you can't tell, I'm scared as hell
'Cause I can't get you on the telephone
So just close your eyes
Oh, honey here comes a lullaby
Your very own lullaby

Please let me take you
Out of the darkness and into the light
'Cause I have faith in you
That you're gonna make it through another night
Stop thinking about the easy way out
There's no need to go and blow the candle out
Because you're not done
You're far too young
And the best is yet to come

So just give it one more try to a lullaby
And turn this up on the radio
If you can hear me now
I'm reaching out
To let you know that you're not alone
And if you can't tell, I'm scared as hell
'Cause I can't get you on the telephone
So just close your eyes
Oh, honey here comes a lullaby
Your very own lullaby

Well, everybody's hit the bottom
Everybody's been forgotten
When everybody's tired of being alone
Yeah, everybody's been abandoned
And left a little empty handed
So if you're out there barely hanging on...

Just give it one more try to a lullaby
And turn this up on the radio
If you can hear me now
I'm reaching out
To let you know that you're not alone
And if you can't tell, I'm scared as hell
'Cause I can't get you on the telephone
So just close your eyes
Oh, honey here comes a lullaby
Your very own lullaby
Oh, honey here comes a lullaby
Your very own lullaby"

I bought the CD behind her back. She smiled when I pulled it out of the bag when we got back to the pack house. I cried as I thought of her singing that song in the shower everyday for weeks. She started getting better, opening up to people, and even gaining the much needed wait. She was finally strong, I started training her to work beside me. Every time she failed at one thing, I would find her the next morning working to get better. I would sit in the door way watching her, admiring her beauty and persistence. When she got stronger, I asked her out. She needed more, but I also knew she needed her mate. She finally said yes, and from there we grew closer. After my Beta was killed in an attack, I asked the pack who should take his place. Everyone pointed to Abby with no hesitation.

I pulled Abby's body closer to me. Her heartbeat was low but strong. The attackers saw her fall and took off running, Nick ran after them. I picked up her body and carried her back to the pack house. The pack doctor ran out with my call and took her from my arms. I followed them into the room and paced while they attached the machines to her and bandaged up her head.
