Chapter 2: 1939: Free City of Danzig PoV:

The ground was rumbling, and that wasn't a good sign. Danzig knew what that meant, ever since she heard the rumors. Third was invading her land, and probably her brother's as well. She had to warn her people, but everyone was already out and ready to fight, holding machine guns, pitchforks, torches, and God knows what else. The White Eagles were already prepared to dive bomb the adversaries, screeching with a fury unknown to anyone who hasn't had to defend their country.

“Danzig, what do we do?” A civilian asked her, clutching a broken glass bottle in one hand.

“We fight until we can't fight anymore,” Danzig said, already grabbing her knife from her boot. She faced away from her city, which she presumed the attack would come from.

There was a horde of Wayfarers loping towards her, all of their guns aimed towards her home. They looked too mechanical for her liking, too unnatural. The White Eagles were divebombing the machines, but they were being killed off by rapid fire from a machine gun. But one was pointed directly at her, and the inside of the turret was a red-orange glow. Danzig took an involuntary step back, knowing this wasn't normal.

Danzig started to run back towards her city, dragging the civilian with her. She looked back to see the turret had a sort of spiral of a red-orange thing. She realized way too late that it was fire and perhaps something worse than fire. Oh shit oh fuck. She thought before dropping to the ground with the civilian, a flaming ball of some sort of fire, zipping past with a sizzling and crackling noise.

“What the fuck was that?” The civilian asked, his voice quite shaky.

“I-I don't know…” Danzig said, the sound of turret machine guns firing and whirring of something powering up, though much faster.

The Wayfarers ran past them, already laying siege to Danzig's home, crushing all resistance fairly quickly. She could hear the gears, cogs, pistons, and other machine parts moving. She felt a cold wave of fear run through her as soon as she saw the flag flapping on the lead Wayfarer, the one that had the strange turret. The flag was red, similar to the color of oxygenated blood with a circle of white and a black symbol that sent chills down her spine.

“N-no..” Danzig whispered, her eyes wide. She held the civilian close, vowing not to allow this one to get hurt. She felt the civilian freeze, and she knew that he saw the flag and realized what it meant.

She saw as the Wayfarers caused the civilians still in her city to scatter, destroying the buildings. The lead Wayfarer stopped and fired whatever type of fire into the collection of homes, causing the town to catch fire.

A pang of anguish went through Danzig's heart at her city being ravaged by savage Germans. They showed no care for the elderly and children in the streets and their homes. They were massacred all the same.

Danzig suddenly stiffened, as she heard a voice shouting, “Ergebt euch, Zivilisten der Freien Stadt Danzig!” It was in the main Tanker language, so she didn't understand.

“They're saying, ‘Surrender, civilians of Free City of Danzig!’” The civilian Danzig had saved whispered, translating it for her.

There was a pause, clearly whoever had shouted was listening for a reply. Danzig internally noted to call for reinforcements.

Sehr gut. Jeder in dieser Stadt wird dafür leiden.” The shouty German said before saying, “Los, zerstöre die Stadt.

“‘Very well. Everyone in this town will suffer for this.’ and ‘Go on, destroy the city.’ They're planning on destroying us!” The civilian exclaimed, trembling slightly.

“No…” Danzig whispered, hugging the civilian close. Everything was going wrong, crashing down around her. Nothing was going the way it was supposed to.

“What do we do?” The civilian asked, looking at Danzig.

“I don't know… I honestly don't know…” Danzig said, terrified of what was to come.
