Gravel bounced off the sides of the Sinclair family van with subtle pinging noises as Enid and Murray pulled off the pack land. However, they weren't subtle to Enid. She had her hands pressed hard over her ears. Each small rapid fire pebble that ricocheted off the fiberglass quarter panels sounded like a full fledged drum line pounding in Enid's head from the inside. The music that filtered through the van speakers sounded unfocused and out of tune, but dialed up to the max. Even the birds outside sounded like they were screaming. She heard sirens somewhere in the distance. They could have been miles away, but they sounded like she was inside the noise itself. It engulfed her fully. She whimpered. She pulled her knees up and tried to hide her head between them. Tears rimmed her eyes. Her dad pulled the van over. "Enid?" He questioned. "Dad?" She questioned back her voice shaky and tight from the pain. The mutually unstated being, 'what the hell is going on?' Then, just like that something stretched and shifted in her head and it was over. The pounding stopped. The pressure became bearable. The excruciating pain in her head dissipated. It all just stopped and Enid returned to 'normal'. The absence of it. The silence that followed, left a ringing in Enid's ears.
Enid sat in her seat gasping for air. Murray Sinclair looked concerned. He was turned towards his daughter leaning over her slightly with his hand resting on the side of the passenger seat. Enid slowly opened her eyes. The light was blinding. She looked up at her father. "Everything just got so loud." She stated. Murray quirked an eyebrow. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say what just happened was your wolf reacting to the full moon like a pup would. I remember the first time my senses started to go haywire before I wolfed out." Murray smiled. "Have any of your other senses 'popped off' as you kids say?" Enid looked at her dad, like he had three heads. 'No he did not.' She thought. "Ew. Dad, don't say that. It sounds weird coming from you. But to answer your question, yes. I have noticed a few things this morning. I had a weird headache when I woke up. Like a pressure. My sense of smell, and hearing were a bit extra this morning. Maybe taste, my breakfast tasted extra yummy. I felt more connected to the land, like I could feel some sort of like tension." She paused. "Like chewing on tin foil?" Murray asked. "Like what?" Enid scrunched up her nose. "Why would anybody do that?" She asked. "It's a figure of speech." Murray sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"No, not like that. Well maybe. I really have no idea actually." Enid replied nervously wringing her hands. Her father cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Sweet heart, how long have you...when did...are there any other changes to your body? Do you feel...have you felt...when two wolves...it's not uncommon to want to...the full moon makes us...Enid, you're growing up..." her father stammered. "This morning dad, ew, and no. Can we please not have 'the talk' I'll be sixteen in like two weeks. I know how it all works." Enid grumbled. She thought about her shower that morning and felt her face flush. Her father smirked. He also sighed in relief. Enid straightened in her seat. "Shall we?" Her father asked. Enid nodded.
The rest of the drive into town was uneventful. No more weird hearing anomalies. Enid and Murray picked up the needed supplies, wolf strength definitely came in handy for that, ran the errands Murray needed to take care of, and stopped by the post office. There were several packages and an entire bin of other mail. Enid helped load it all into the van keeping what was addressed to her separate from the rest.
They both climbed in, took their seats, and clicked in their seatbelts. "Hey hun, how would you like to have lunch with your dear old dad? If you're not too old that it." Murray teased Enid. She smiled. They used to do things like this all the time before she went off to Nevermore. They'd spend the day together doing this and that then have lunch. "Dad, of course. I'd totally love that." Enid replied.
Murray drove to a local diner and parked. The name of the place was 'The Roadkill Grill' "Any qualms about greasy diner food?" He teased Enid. "Nah I'm good. As long as they don't actually serve roadkill here that is." Enid fake gaged and shivered with her hand on her chest. She smiled brightly at her father. He smiled back.
