Chapter 10: Red
Never in my life had I seen someone move so fast. It took Will less than a second to react to the immediate danger suddenly exploding all around us. With impeccable swiftness, Will had me thrown over the bed and clutched against his chest in a tight little ball even before the shards of glass had time to hit the floor.
“Are you okay?” Will asked through gritted teeth and because I was tucked so compactly against him, I could clearly see the pulsing, angry looking veins sprawled up his neck. He was infuriated.
“Y-Yes,” I croaked, still in shock. After a second of hesitation, Will smoothly stood up but without ever releasing his firm grip on me. Then, shockingly, his head whipped toward the window and his eyes narrowed into tiny slits.
“Hold on to me,” he commanded, hiking me higher up until my face rested against his throat. Numbly, I quickly looped my arms around Will’s shoulders and chewed the inside of my cheek anxiously.
With slow, calculating steps, Will made his way across the shard-scattered floor until he reached close enough to look out the open window. I couldn’t help but suddenly look over too. However, now looking back, I wish I never had.
Bellow, like an accumulation of my greatest nightmares, were at least a hundred of the devilish wolves I’d been attacked by. With red, crazed eyes and black fur the animals were stalking, snarling, howling and attacking everything in their path… including city wolves.
In the midst of my anxiety attack I could distantly hear Will snarling viciously. Then, just as quickly as before, he tightened his arms around me before bolting out of the room and into the shadowy hallway.
“Please try and calm down Cass,” Will coaxed me worriedly, even though he was still unbelievably angered. How could I possibly even begin to calm down? I was, for the first time, in a state of unmanageable horror. I really couldn’t manage to process any sort of rational thought because I felt as if I’d been caught up in a whirl of heightened emotions.
Realizing we stopped, I snapped my head up and watched dully as Will swore quietly and rushed us into a dark, deserted supply room. There, without much of a sound, Will placed me gently onto the floor before turning back to lock the door. Still paralyzed from fear, I stiffly allowed Will to once again gather my weak body in his arms.
“I’ll protect you Cass, I swear I will,” Will choked out softly as he wiped my damp eyes. I was crying? When did that happen? I swallowed tightly and felt the feelings in my limbs slowly creep back to life.
“I won’t let anyone ever hurt you again,” Will whispered with a heart-breaking tone as he cupped my heated cheeks. I wanted nothing more than to sooth him and tell him I was all right but in that moment I knew I wasn’t. Deep down I knew that everything wasn’t going to be okay.
After another moment of silence in the darkened room, I heard them. At first I had thought my ears were playing tricks on me but after another sound, I realized I was miserably wrong. Inhuman, vicious, and hungry growls began echoing from down the hall. As I finally shook myself, I could then hear not only the range of growls but also thunderous, pounding steps inching across the floor. Hearing them as well, Will immediately tightened his hold on me before shifting my body behind him.
