RITVIK ANAND'S POV:
Thursday, April 2ndOn the second day of school, even though it was technically the first day of classes, majority of the day was spent going over policies and rules.
Today was the first day in which we were going to have classes. I headed to my classroom early, after I was done with my morning routine. Unlike the others, I couldn't afford being lazy because my physical ability was my best asset back in my world. To help me with my workout, I planned on joining a sports club, even though I still don't know which one I'll be joining.
It was around 5 minutes before 7:00AM, the start of homeroom. All 40 students are present for our first day of class, as well. This is pretty exceptional given that most of the students would want to arrive right on time.
I wonder... Who indirectly motivated each student to arrive early?
What a mystery.
The bell rang soon after, and Hiratsuka-sensei proceeded to get everyone's attention to initiate homeroom.
"Good morning students. Today begins the first day of your classes. I'll be explaining which classes you will take throughout the day. Keep in mind that the schedule is outlined in your handbook. This will be fixed for the rest of the trimester." She said.
With forty students paying full attention, sensei continued to outline the rest of our day.
"History will be the first period class, every day. Today, Mathematics will be right after. Science is third period. Geography will be fourth, with a lunch break soon after. Fifth period will resume with English. Then, you will go straight to the First-Year Gymnasium for Physical Education. To end the instructional day, I'll be teaching Japanese for the seventh period. Any questions?" sensei asked, expecting at least one student to raise their hand.
"No? Good. Each class will be 60 minutes long. The exceptions are morning homeroom and lunch break, which will be 15 and 45 minutes respectively. If you've done the math, your instructional day ends at 3:00PM. Notice that this school emphasized its real-world applications. Akin to your potential 8-hour workdays, studying is your job." Hiratsuka-sensei explained, going in depth about the school's reasoning as well.
This much could be surmised if one were to read the handbook.
Breaking the flow of sensei's lecture, I raised my hand to ask a question.
"Sensei, you mentioned that our class time is modelled on 8-hour workdays but also stated that our instructional day ends at 3:00PM on the dot. Is there something else that occurs right after? Any extracurricular activities, to be precise?" I asked with a blank look on my face.
The students looked at me with confusion but soon realized what I was trying to get at.
"You're right..." Hiratsuka-sensei smirked. "I was going to hold off on announcing this since it's too early in the morning, but seeing how we have seven minutes left for homeroom... Oh, why not? You'll be having club activities after school. They usually range from 4:00PM-7:00PM."
"Nice!"
"Hell yeah!"
Several murmurs of approval were heard and then soon, our first day of school began.
The surprising thing was that the teachers were super lenient, which sort of created a relaxed atmosphere. Many of the students had their expectations completely blown away by how nice and friendly the teachers were.
After all, deciding to listen to the lesson or not is our choice, so the teacher wasn't concerned. Is this how teachers interact with students that are no longer part of compulsory education?
